  • Another goal of mine was to drive across the famous Astoria Bridge, next on my agenda (not Dave’s). At least this destination was on the way to Portland where we had reservations for the night. The As...  more »

  • Absolutely love this bridge. The view of the bridge and from the bridge is fantastic. I find it interesting to see the sea gulls flying parallel to the bridge as if they have their own lane. I never m...  more »

  • Right around the town of Olympia Washington starts US 101. It heads northwest from there, and lackadaisically meanders around Olympic National Park as it begins to head south to Aberdeen. Traveling south from there you pass through Raymond, and then head towards the coast where you finally come to Long Beach and Ilwaco, Washington. Then, just a few miles south of there, you see it- The Astoria-Megler Bridge. Gateway to the Oregon Coast. At an astounding 4.1 miles long, it is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. It crosses the Columbia River at the town of Astoria (on the Oregon side) and is about 14 miles east of the mouth of the Columbia River as it empties into the Pacific Ocean. It’s one of my favourite bridges to photograph. This image is a long exposure, taken underneath the bridge on a very cloudy autumn morning, just after sunrise. The Astoria-Megler bridge is, to me, a starting point. Several times a year I drive from my home in Vancouver B.C. for a trip down the Oregon Coast and once I reach the bridge, I know I’ve finally reached the beginning of the Oregon Coast. And that’s when all the fun begins.
  • It was a beautiful place to photograph. Quite a cool drive too. I wasn't there to actually cross into Washington but to enjoy the bridge itself.
  • It's a blast to cross the bridge, truly a gateway. Just be careful that there is not an accident, then you'll be able to catch the views for a long time! Haha.
  • This is one of the longest bridge on our tour. Way back in 2005 we went down the hwy 101 from Seattle to San Francisco by bicycle. We had a wonderful time on so many places. We liked most the bridges because of the views. Some of them are real nice bridges. Sometimes the shoulder could be wider.
  • Love this bridge! Not only is it the best way to get for Astoria, OR to Washington's Long Beach Peninsula, it is beautiful 4.1 mile drive across the mouth of the Columbia River.
