  • On our first day in the refuge, the lighthouse was closed. Luckily, when we returned the following day, it was open for visitors to climb, and climb we did - round and round, up the spiral staircase, ...  more »
  • One of the great lighthouses. Small walk to a beautifully maintained light. If you're lucky you might see some wild ponies while visiting.  more »
  • I am a big lighthouse fan. This one was beautiful, as they usually are. It was a Monday when we went to see it and it was closed for climbing. It was sprinkling a bit that day so my husband said he wo...  more »

  • Let's get this out of the way first - there are LOTS and LOTS of steps in this spiral stairwell! Your legs will be tired and you will need to rest a few times before reaching the top! If you have asthma or get winded easily, this is probably not going to be pleasant for you to be honest. With that said, this is a really cool experience to be had on this island. The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable about the islands history and facts regarding the wild ponies. The best part, is admission is FREE as of this review date. It's completely donation based. So for any amount (or none), you can climb to the top and see the island in all it's glory! HIGHLY recommended. But beware, the walking trails are in the woods, so SPRAY UP or pay the price of the island's massive mosquito population! You've been warned!
  • This was an awesome place to visit, even though it closes at 3 pm you can still get up close and get some wonderful photos. And the drive to get there by way of the Chesapeake Bat Bridge was scenic as well even though some of the drive was not so desirable. If you're taking the kids be sure they have something to keep them occupied for the trip.
  • Really fun! I went at a time when it was open inside the light house and it was a great experience, I'd do it again. I have 2 children, 8 & 4 and they were able to climb to the top no problem.
  • Beatiful location with a nice, short loop trail to get there. Also a handicapped accessible lot right nearby if needed.
  • Beautiful views! Came here on a sunny Fall Day, there had been lots of rain so the trail was absolutely flooded, fording it was not an option. Found out that if you follow the road a bit farther there's a driveway you can walk up that's intended for HC accessible visitors use. For those looking to skip the trail to avoid mosquitos maybe this is a better, less wooded route.
