Maroon Bells, Aspen

4.8
Bell-shaped peaks and the distinctive maroon that colors the landscape gives the name to these famous, oft-photographed mountains. Choose from several hiking trails that provide spectacular views Maroon Bells, which measure 4,267 m (14,000 ft) high. Admire the surrounding landscapes of valleys filled with aspen and fir trees. Picturesque Maroon Lake formed from glaciers during the Ice Age sits below the peaks. For the more serious alpinists, take the trail to Crate Lake, 2.4 km (1.5 mi) beyond Maroon Lake. Shuttle buses run daily to the mountains; vehicle access is allowed but be prepared to pay a fee. • The lake is beautiful! We also hiked up to crater lake and then on our way back down we walked up the scenic route above maroon bells, this little walk was better than the crater lake hike. There are ...  more »
  • It was a great hike. We arrived before 8:00 so we could drive into the National Forest. The hike was 3.6 miles and was worth the climb.  more »
  • It is beautiful beyond words. Travelled with a toddler, took bus to go from aspen highlands to maroon bells. Bus is very convenient and runs on frequent intervals. We did a small hike for 1.5 miles. E...  more »

  • Located only about 10 miles from Aspen, Colorado, the Maroon Bells are two 14,000-foot peaks in the Elk Mountains that are reflected in crystal-clear Maroon Lake, snuggled in a glacial valley. They are the crown jewels of the Rocky Mountains and by far one of the most photographed scenes in the country. It is difficult to say when the timeless beauty of these two sentinels mirrored in the lake is more striking: In the summer, when every hiking trail takes you through fields of wild flowers, in the fall, when tall aspen trees dazzle with a rainbow of fall colors, or in the winter, when snow and ice silence the world. The best photo opportunities are from one of the many hiking trails – access by motor vehicles is limited. The lake is popular among fly-fishermen – even if they don’t catch anything, the beauty all around them is enough
  • It's one of those places that when you visit in person, it's a memory you'll never forget. The majestic views seem photoshopped in real life. Everyone should see this at least once, you'll be happy you did!
  • This place is gorgeous. Great American Landmark that is well worth the trip. I am a disabled veteran and having the ability to drive up close is such a blessing. Never any shortage of photographers at this location so be prepared for a lot of cameras.
