Pioneer Tunnel is a tourist attraction located in Ashland, PA. The tourist attraction has a coal mine tour, steam train ride, a gift shop, and food shop.

The Coal Mine Tour is described as a horizontal drift mine. Its level tunnel runs 1800 feet straight into the side of the Mahanoy Mountain. You make the trip in comfort, riding in open mine cars pulled by a battery-operated mine motor.

The steam train ride allows you to travel back through time on an old-time narrow gauge steam locomotive, the Henry Clay. Built in the 1920's, The Henry Clay takes you on a scenic three-quarter mile ride around the side of Mahanoy Mountain to show you another kind of mining called strip mining. You'll visit the Mammoth Stripping, an area where an unusually thick seam of anthracite known as the Mammoth Vein outcrops to the surface of the earth.

  • Too long in the tunnel, cold and wet. Should be shorter. The bathrooms were locked when we arrived. The guide was functioning as an apologist for the coal industry.

  • It was actually very cool to learn about. The mountain view was neat. The coal tunnel was very detailed and had a replication of what the sounds of them getting coal by firepower was like. If you do the coal tunnel be aware to dress warm ( even if it's hot outside) and wear junk clothes as you could get muddy. The tunnel was freezing cold, but still enjoyable.
  • What a cool and interesting place. We happened on this location by chance when we had plans to visit Knobels but it was super packed. Our kids from age 13-6 thought this was cooler than the park. It was a loud, cold and informative visit with the guides being the best part. The steam train was awesome and the views can't be beat. My kids left with a new appreciation for what it meant to be a coal miner in PA and couldn't believe the conditions that these folks had to work in to make a living. The playground outside made it perfect for everyone to enjoy the day. Highly recommend stopping in the town as well to support their local businesses and restaurants! Good people and great times!
  • Fantastic underground coal mine experience. Very educational and great for all ages. Fun steam train ride is also available. Bring your family and or friends to enjoy some quality time together.
  • This place was awesome! The coal mine was really really cool and our guide Mr Kehoe was so knowledgeable funny and nice. The train was fun also. I really don’t know how I’ve never been here before. If you’re trying to find an interesting place to visit this is definitely it!
  • Nice tour and steam train ride. Happy to see anthracite history preserved. A must experience if you're in the area as a tourist or even if you're a local looking to understand the roots of our region. The tour guides both in the mine and steam ride were professional and informative. The gift shop was nice and very fairly priced. My family will be back again
