Grove Arcade, Asheville

3.9
Tour the Palladian and Gothic architecture of Grove Arcade as you indulge in a little shopping at this historical mall. The structure--designed by architect Charles N. Parker for E.W. Grove, a self-made millionaire and Asheville resident--was built in 1929 and restored in 2002. Outside, note the regal, winged lions at the north entrance. Inside, you'll find ornate, spiral staircases and the grotesques--gargoyle-like decorations that line the north and south arcades. At the outdoor Portico Market, explore the wares of farmers and craftspeople--and be sure to try some traditional fudge. • We visited when there were pretty holiday decorations up, and a showing of gingerbread houses. There are lots of small specialty shops with interesting things to see. I was most interested in the Wood...  more »
  • Nice small strolling mall in the downtown area. Several small local shops and restaurants are located at the arcade. We shop there every time we visit Asheville  more »
  • The most interesting shop for me was the glass blower. You can get the most beautiful glass Christmas ornaments. There is also a good restaurant with outside seating.  more »

  • Really a tough review - Each shop is unique and provides something different than a neighboring shop... The Arcade is really great to wander and just marvel at the timeless beautiful architecture and craftsmanship!! Great reprieve from the weather as well (regardless if it hot or cold!)
  • Shopping mall, art gallery, local business and restaurants all in the same place. There are places for outside vendors too. Architecture of the building , both interior and exterior are worth looking at closely. Some of the shops are really interesting like grandfather clock shop, yarn shop.
  • Opening: 1929. I & mom went to visit there. Wow, so beautiful place, shopping, very old building. I love it see everywhere go. 😮💜
  • Every time I come to Asheville - I come to the Grove Arcade. This is a mall before mall's even existed. Truly a marvel in early collective commerce! I really enjoy the layout and the architecture. I understand this is from the 1920's and, to me, is the center of AVL commerce. I navigate using this location as the zero-point.
  • Great indoor shopping area with lots of stores
