Biltmore, Asheville

#1 of 3,135 in Wineries in United States
The main house on Biltmore contains more than 250 rooms, making it the largest privately owned home in the world. A short drive from the city, the sprawling estate includes landscaped gardens, stables, expansive hiking trails, and an award-winning winery. Go on a guided tour of the Renaissance-inspired house to learn about the Vanderbilt family, who built this large family home between 1889 and 1895. You may prefer a coach tour of the 3,237 hectare (8,000 acre) estate, where you'll learn how this land was developed and visit areas generally not open to regular guests. Explore the website to determine which tour is best suited to your interests, and reserve your tickets at least two days in advance. • For over 50 years I have had the pleasure of visiting the magnificent Biltmore house and gardens. Every visit leaves me in awe at so many levels. The art treasures, craftsmanship, landscaping and family history are so impressive to me. This year for the first time I took the Candlelight Christmas tour. It was an enchanted evening for all of my family. Be sure to pay a little extra and rent the easy to use audio tour.
  • The house was amazing. They were doing a great deal of cleaning when we went. Employees were very nice and happy to answer any questions we had. The only reason I did not give them 5 stars was in order to get to a restroom you had to go to the first level and leave the actual house. Then go to a separate area. It was a fairly good walk to get to a rest room.
  • Super cool place. We were there when they had a super cool blown glass exhibit in the gardens. I grew up in Belgium and have traveled all over Europe, I've seen cool formal gardens all over the world. And these can compete! It was extra fun to hang out in the succulent room. And the best part, if you stay outside and keep them leashed, totally dog friendly!
  • Amazing residence and interesting story of the people and lives lived at Biltmore. Get the audio tour, enhances the walk around. Formal gardens are amazing, particularly the greenhouse. If you like the Victorian era this tour is perfect. The wine room is okay, wait times can be discouraging and the rises to the level of okay to not bad.
  • Everyone knows the Biltmore is supposed to be amazing. I find that the mansion is nearly impossible to appreciate in it's entirety due to the sheer amount of intricate details combined with the way the self guided tour is structured. Simply put, a visitor is too restricted to fully appreciate what the house is. Obviously it has to be structured this way, otherwise the house would be ruined, but it's still worth noting.
