Tour · Scenic Railroad
The Delaware and Ulster Railroad is a heritage railroad based in Arkville, New York.
The last regularly scheduled passenger train over the former Ulster & Delaware Railroad (U&D) tracks was operated between Kingston and Oneonta by the New York Central Railroad on March 31, 1954. The tracks were then cut back to Bloomville in 1965 to make way for construction of Interstate 88 near Oneonta, and for lack of freight business west of Bloomville. Ownership of the tracks passed to Penn Central in 1968, and to the government-backed Conrail on April 1, 1976. The last westbound freight train over the mountains was operated by Conrail on September 26, 1976, with the return trip to gather up all remaining freight cars taking place on October 2, 1976.
The DURR is a subsidiary of the not-for-profit Catskill Revitalization Corporation, of Stamford, NY, which owns the former U&D railbed between Highmount, New York and Bloomville, New York: 45 miles. The line was acquired from Penn Central in 1980, for $770,000, following the successful regional advocacy for this by noted transportation attorney Donald L. Pevsner. Funding was provided by the A. Lindsay and Olive B. O'Connor Foundation, of Hobart, NY, which currently has $57 million in assets derived from IBM stock that was sold to Mr. O'Connor directly by Thomas Watson, Sr., IBM's founder, in the 1920s. The Foundation conveyed the 45-mile-long line to the Delaware County Towns through which it passed, and these Towns later conveyed it to the non-profit Catskill Revitalization Corporation. The new tourist railroad started operations in 1983, between Highmount and Arkville, NY, and extended operations later to the Arkville-Roxbury, NY segment.

  • Was a very fun get away for the wife and I. It was an old school steam engine train ride through upstate New York. The scenery was great. The food and the staff was great. A good relaxing day, would like to get back for the train robbery show.
  • Update: We went and had a nice time. The staff was friendly, the train was comfortable. The route wasn't as scenic as I had hoped but it still made for a nice outing. Update: I finally got a response via email and then a phone call from a nice individual. I got my questions cleared up, I will update again after we have what I hope will be an enjoyable train ride =) I can't get in touch with anyone who works here. I've been trying for over a week. Called 4 times, left two messages and an email. I'm trying to clarify something I saw on the website prior to booking and I haven't been able to get any help. I'm still going to check this place out though and I will update if the company redeems themselves.
  • Enjoyed the ride. Looking forward to next year to ride again . Great crew ! Enjoyed the ride with the conductor, Mrs. Claus, the hot chocolate and the ginger bread cookies !
  • It was a really fun trip and my kids loved it the leaves were great colors and the train ride was a lot of fun. The conductor did a good job of making everything runs smoothly we will definitely go again soon
  • I loved the two trips I did which included the Train Robbery and barbecue and the Excursion I did the day after. I look forward to coming back the following year to do the lunch in the Dome on the Rip Van Winkle flyer if possible and I'm looking forward to doing a trip to Roxbury and the Catskill Scenic Trail and or a trip on the new planned route for next year.
