Coronado National Forest, Arizona

4.9
#143 of 196 in Nature in Arizona
The Coronado National Forest includes an area of about 1.78 million acres (7,200 km2) spread throughout mountain ranges in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico.
It is located in parts of Cochise, Graham, Santa Cruz, Pima, and Pinal counties in Arizona, and Hidalgo County in New Mexico.
The National Forest is divided into five ranger districts. The districts themselves are not contiguous; each consists of multiple "sky island" mountain ranges.
The Santa Catalina Ranger District near the city of Tucson comprises the Santa Catalina and Rincon Mountains. Included in this area is the highest peak of the Santa Catalinas, Mount Lemmon, the rugged Pusch Ridge Wilderness Area, and the popular Sabino Canyon. Much of this district was part of Santa Catalina National Forest before its inclusion in Coronado.

  • Cool place! We enjoyed the Junior Ranger program here. The Rangers spent extra time with the kids which meant a lot to me. We hiked Montezuma Pass all the way up to the peak. Once there it was easy to identify the border. There are a couple other hikes you should check out as well.
  • A true gem in the middle of the desert. So many things to do and see for the outdoor enthusiasts and families alike. My. Lemmon is amazing and the surrounding areas are breath taking. A great spot for a retreat from the Tucson heat in the summer and play in the snow come winter time. Picnic, hike, camp and fish to your hearts content. Just make sure you have a full tank of gas before heading up, there are no vehicle services available
  • Unique hikes, beautiful scenery. Something for everyone. Nice visitor center. Nice roads and parking areas. Restrooms throughout. Drive to look-out points.
  • This area is actually an extention of the Nature Conservancy at Ramsey Canyon. This lookout is about 6300 feet in elevation. Awesome hike to get there. Make sure you take plenty of water and wear a pair of hiking boots as the trail has fine gravel and it's easy to slip and fall. Well worth the time and effort!
  • So quiet! We camped in dispersed camp sites about 11 miles down a dirt road and it was totally silent all night. It's amazing to find that kind of quiet these days!
