Landscape Arch, Arches National Park

4.8
#2 of 7 in Trails in Arches National Park
Landscape Arch is the longest of the many natural rock arches located in the Arches National Park in Utah, United States. The arch is among many in the area known as Devil's Garden in the north area of the park. It was named by Frank Beckwith, leader of the Arches National Monument Scientific Expedition, who explored the area in the winter of 1933–1934, and can be reached by a walk of 0.8mi one-way along a graded gravel trail. The Natural Arch and Bridge Society (NABS) now considers the Landscape Arch to be the fifth longest natural arch in the world, having measured the span in 2004 at 290.1ft ±0.8ft, which is slightly longer than a measurement made by the Society in 2006 of Kolob Arch in Zion National Park. The most recent recorded rockfall events occurred in the 1990s when one large slab fell (1991) and then two additional large rockfalls occurred (1995). Due to the rockfalls, the trail beneath the arch was closed.

  • It's a nice walk to the arch and it looks pretty cool. I can imagine it can be crowded but when we were there it was not to bad. You can hike up a little further for a nice high up view point.  more »

  • My favorite walk in arches. A definite must see. It is quite an easy walk from the parking lot and the first Arch on the Devil's Garden Trail. The trail to this point is well kept and wide.
  • Stunning and gravity defying come to mind when you see it. Morning sun would likely be best for taking photos. Afternoon the sun sets behind the arch and the light is more difficult for photos. You also expect to see Wyle E. Coyote chasing a roadrunner across the span.
  • If you only go this far into the Devils Garden, it's worth it. Phenomenal arch!
  • Short walk and lots of parking, definitely a must see! Lots of other arches close by as well
  • An iconic arch. But keep going up the trail to double arch and Dark Angel. That is where is gets really cool.

Where to stay in Arches National Park

Arches National Park provides camping at the Devils Garden Campground, but most visitors opt to stay in the town of Moab south of the park. You'll find every type of accommodation here, including economy motels, small inns with a rustic Southwest vibe, bed and breakfasts, lodges, and campgrounds. Moab's economy largely revolves around park visitors, so you'll find plenty of restaurants, supermarkets, and various services here. A few publicly operated campgrounds line Route 128 on the park's eastern edge, and a few more accommodations sit on Route 191 off the park's western border.
