History of Hawks Nest

The name of this area comes from the osprey ("fish hawks") that once nested on the cliffs. Today, many hawks, turkey vultures, and black vultures are seen soaring above the canyon.

Hawks Nest Dam

The Hawks Nest Dam that can be seen below the Hawks Nest Overlook dates back to the 1930s. This dam was built to provide water for a hydroelectric plant in Alloy. The tunnel averages 30ft. in diameter, travels a distance of 3 miles through Gauley Mountain. Steel grating on the right side of the dam is the entrance. The dam is not park property and is off-limits to the public.

  • My husband and I visited Hawks Nest while we were on our honeymoon, piddling around. It has amazing views that overlook the gorge. The drive to the Nest was, in itself, beautiful.. The park is clean a...  more »
  • Nice state park with great overlook of the gorge (of the New River). Trails are well maintained. The lodge looks nice but the restaurant is closed now for construction.  more »
  • We were there just before a wedding was to take place at this site. A very quiet park with a short walking trail and great views of the gorge. Nice small gift shop with clean restrooms.  more »

  • Beautiful and classic. Definitely not a modern lodge whatsoever, so don't come here expecting that. It has the appearance of on the edge of run down, especially in the off season, but that kind of contributes to the earthy, nature-takes-over vibe it has. The silence floods your ears with the sounds of the unseen waterfall and calls of birds and insects. Quite peaceful and relaxing
  • The Hawk's Nest State Park Lodge is located here and is a good spot to stay if your in the area site seeing. There are lots to do around here and nice views of the New River Gorge from the Lodge itself. There is big back deck where the Aerial Tram is located which you can ride to the New River below. There is a nice little Gift Store there as well with lots of souvenirs to chose from. Around the bend heading on down Rt60 is another Overlook, Picnic Shelter, and Gift Shop... worth the stop for day trips or picnic lunches. Check my G+ or FB Picture Albums/Posts for more
  • Amazing staff that even have my pup 5 star treatment. Sidney is amazing to talk to and deal with. Dustin (or Dusty) was super helpful when I booked my next stay and even offered to help me with hiking trails on my next trip. Room was beyond comfortable and nicely remodeled. Hoping for a pet friendly canyon view when I go back!!
  • Very relaxing great views. You can see the New river bridge. Would be a great place for a family picnic.
  • So beautiful. If I ever come back, I'd love to spend the night at the lodge
