The William Paca House is an 18th-century Georgian mansion in Annapolis, Maryland, United States. William Paca was a signatory of the Declaration of Independence and a three-term Governor of Maryland. The house was built between 1763 and 1765 and its architecture was largely designed by Paca himself. The 2acre walled garden, which includes a two-story summer house, has been restored to its original state. The William Paca House and Garden was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971.The original one-story office and kitchen pavilions, and their connecting hyphens, were altered in the 19th century with the house's conversion to a hotel, by a second story added to the hyphens and the west wing. These changes have since been reversed, and the building approximates its original outward appearance, both inside and out.HistoryIn 1780, Paca sold the house to Thomas Jenings, the attorney general of Maryland.Carvel HallThe house and grounds were eventually acquired by the Annapolis Hotel Corporation, and the house became the lobby and conference rooms for a new hotel constructed in the garden immediately to the rear. The hotel, known as "Carvel Hall," opened with two-hundred guest rooms in 1906. But, by 1964, a mixed-use development was proposed for the site that would have demolished the house and the hotel, putting high rises in its place.

  • I headed to the Paca House Garden on the advice of a lovely local I met after lunch. William Paca is one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. It was a warm day (74 in mid-October!) For a...  more »
  • It was nice exploring the gardens, but the house was mediocre and not really different than any other period home. Not really worth the $10.  more »
  • Compared to some of the formal gardens of Europe, the garden is rather small, but it definitely charming. I would love to see the rose garden when the roses are in full bloom. There’s a wide variety o...  more »

  • I had the opportunity to shoot a wedding here yesterday! This place is GORGEOUS! I'll post pictures soon. The staff was friendly and the good was great! There are multiple opportunities for photo ops to happen here. There's one particular place called "The Garden" and it's really nice!
  • If you want one of the most beautiful setting to host a party this is the place! Jody Dalton will walk you through the entire process, the stress level drops to zero. I forgot that I was having my 40th renewal of our vows due to her outstanding service. She did it all, and turned around the next morning to do it all over again. Thanks for the memories!
  • This is a great place to consider to have a wedding, we had our daughters wedding here and it could not have gone any smoother. Jodi and her staff were great to work with and and were always very accommodating. I highly recommend that you consider the Paca House during your planning of such a important day, you will be glad you did.
  • Beautiful historic house with a gorgeous garden. The tour for the house is 10 dollars, the garden visit is free. In the house the tour guide leads to the rooms of the first and second floor and explains about them.
  • I lived across the street for several years a long time ago. The doll house in the gift shop is the replica of where we lived. The Pace house is amazing, especially when you see how they used the property back in the early to mid 1900s. Great restoration of the gardens!

Where to stay in Annapolis

Annapolis's historical downtown area draws the city's tourists, so there's plenty of choice of accommodations here. Small inns and charming bed and breakfasts represent most of the options in this part of town, with a couple even offering views of Annapolis Harbor. If everything here is booked, try the collection of national-chain hotels to the west of downtown, although access to the city's attractions isn't as convenient. Try to reserve in advance if you plan to visit during a summer weekend.
