Anna Maria Island Historical Museum, Anna Maria

#3 of 8 in Things to do in Anna Maria
A visit to the Anna Maria Island Historical Complex is a trip back into Florida history. The Island has a vast and rich history beginning with its earliest times as an Indian fishing camp, to the arrival of the Spanish in 1530, to the Island’s first homesteader George Emerson Bean in 1893 and his son Wilhelm’s development of the first tract of land along with “Fig Newton” inventor Charles Roser.

The Anna Maria Island Historical Society’s [AMIHS] beautifully restored complex interprets the Island’s history through its museum, City Jail, Belle Haven [cracker] Cottage and the Mangrove Walk’s indigenous garden.

  • Neat little museum that tells you about the history of Anna Maria Island. Free entry (donations accepted). A guide was there for questions. Really awesome collection of everyday artifacts from old island inhabitants. Could be a great learning opportunity for kids about how life used to be back in the day. Had a small souvenir/gift shop. The jail cell outside is a great photo opportunity. There is a small cabin next door too that is set up how it would have been in the past. Great stop for families or anyone interested in times past. Will put things into perspective on how far we've come when you're surrounded everywhere else by the commercial touristy aspects of the island.
  • This adorable and well curated little gem of a museum is inside of an old icehouse! Presenting the origins of Anna Maria Island, collecting items from homesteading to present day! Really fun staff - free guides will fill you in on the fun details. The old jail is a required photo for all island visitors! Stop here first for maps of the area and be sure to make a donation!
  • Small but great museum of local history on Anna Maria island. The old jail building is a must see for any visitor to the island.
  • Make sure to stop by and get a picture Infront of the jail and learn about Anna Maria history.
  • interesting facts about the island I never knew about such as the house that fell into the Tampa Bay or the jail in the back
