  • We loved this walking trail. It's a beautiful, short hike that our 7 and 8 year old were able to do and enjoy. There's a trail down to the river, and you can get close to the falls.  more »
  • Saw the sign at the road and decided to hike to the falls. Was a beautiful day and the path is very pretty and serene. Quite a hike up the hill to the falls but well worth the beauty of the falls.  more »
  • We had so much fun here hiking both up & down the mountain great views. Bring water as no water fountain  more »

  • This was a nice hike back to picturesque falls. The trail does have a few hills, but was definitely easier coming back as it had more downhill in that direction. There were a lot of families there, and dogs with owners, so it is not solitude in the woods. The trail is typically the width of a sidewalk. Note that there are places along the trail where the it is close to a drop off, so it's best to not let really young kids get too far ahead.
  • Nice nature walk. There is a viewing platform for those who don't hike regularly or can't handle the elevation change. If you are more active you can take a trail right down to the base of the waterfall. There's something for everyone at Thunderbird Falls.
  • This is a great place to take a walk. It has beautiful sights and a nice wide trail. The viewing deck is a nice spot for a quick lunch, but it isn't huge. It is a good family activity, but maybe not best for strollers.
  • About a two mile round trip that I would rate moderately difficult due to some steep grades and they may be slippery with the rain. Views from steep cliffs, waterfall is pretty, and the typical Alaskan vegetation adds to the experience. On this busy trail it's unlikely you'll encounter bears. Not many moose in that area from my experience. Still, pack a gun and/or bear spray. Also there's a parking fee of $5, don't forget to get your yearly pass if you plan on checking out at least 10 places with fees this year. Park pass is $50.
  • Simple kid-friendly hike but also lovely for adults too. Trails are well-maintained. Two destination options (or both!) of the falls from a viewing deck or down at the base alongside the creek.

Where to stay in Anchorage

Anchorage hotels increase room rates during the height of the tourist season, but you can visit the area economically any time of year by choosing a budget-friendly bed and breakfast or small inn. The city's downtown area contains the priciest rooms; most are offered by chain hotels. You can find less expensive rooms at a cluster of hotels located in Midtown, a largely commercial neighborhood with a good selection of restaurants and shops.
