Flattop Mountain Trail, Anchorage
(4.7/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Reward yourself with some of the best views in Alaska on Flattop Mountain Trail. Located in the Chugach State Park, Flattop is one the most popular and frequently explored areas in the state. The hiking trail takes you to the top of the mountain where, on a clear day, you can see as far as Mt. McKinley. The trail is 2.7 km (1.7 mi) long in one direction, with an elevation gain of 396 m (1,300 ft). While the first half of the trail climbs gradually, the second half is much steeper and may require some rock-climbing skills. The trail has no accessible water source, so be sure to bring enough water, as well as a windproof jacket for the strong winds at the peak.
