  • Took a ride on a clear day to the top of Arctic Valley. Long slow assent and a little bumpy. Not many turnouts for photos because the trees have grown up. Got up to the Lodge and there was a private f...  more »
  • We were looking for somewhere else to pick berries besides flattop. We found this trail off Google. The drive up was a little bumpy, glad I was driving a rental car and not my own. The hike is steep b...  more »
  • Arctic Valley is a great place to walk your dog, take in some great views, and pick berries come August! For a less intense hike (compared to those like Flat Top) but one that will still get your hear...  more »

  • Summer or winter this is our favorite outdoor playground, conveniently located 15 minutes out of Anchorage. Occasional bear activity, bring your spray and bells in spring. Arctic Valley isn't a state or municipal park, so your normal parking stickers won't work: it's $5 to park for the day, or $20 for an annual pass (well worth it). First timers should head straight through the valley to the back ridge, about 2 miles of easy hiking gently uphill on a well-worn trail. You'll be rewarded with vistas of Alaska's endless mountain ranges, and the South Fork River below. But once you're there, you'll also find the easiest trails up to the ridge lines. To the North lies a long ridgeline overlooking Eagle River, Anchorage, and the Ocean, eventually bringing you right back to the parking lot. Or you can traverse the Southern ridge to Rendezvous Peak. Especially if trekking the Northern ridgeline, be aware that there are active military installations, and I have seen MPs out with binoculars searching for trespassers.
  • Great place to go for a hike or a quick drive.
  • Fantastic little gem of a ski area. Not usually too busy, run by volunteers and has a very local vibe instead of the big resort feel. Skiing is very good for a small mountain. Has two lifts and a tow rope and they take you right to the top. The rest is pretty much wide open with beautiful views of Arctic valley and jber
  • Great hiking in summer. Expect to pay five bucks to park. Winter skiing is great, but it's rustic, with older lifts and very little grooming. They also don't make snow here so it might open a lot later in the season depending on mother nature.
  • Awesome. Very cold

Where to stay in Anchorage

Anchorage hotels increase room rates during the height of the tourist season, but you can visit the area economically any time of year by choosing a budget-friendly bed and breakfast or small inn. The city's downtown area contains the priciest rooms; most are offered by chain hotels. You can find less expensive rooms at a cluster of hotels located in Midtown, a largely commercial neighborhood with a good selection of restaurants and shops.
