Amboy Crater is an extinct cinder cone volcano that rises above a 70-square-kilometer (27 sq mi) lava field in the eastern Mojave Desert of southern California, within Mojave Trails National Monument.
It is about 75 miles (120 km) equidistant from Barstow to the west and Needles to the east, and 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south of historic U.S. Route 66, near the town of Amboy in San Bernardino County. In 1973, Amboy Crater was designated the Amboy Crater National Natural Landmark.

  • We saw loads of interesting lizards & that was one of the highlights of this hike. It took us about 1.5 hours from start to return. It was scorching hot; so a hat, sunblock and enough water is...  more »
  • There is no water or trashcans at this site, which re-enforces the "pack it in, pack it out" admonition. Found one cigarette butt on the trail, otherwise there was not trash to be found at the site.....  more »
  • The hike to the crater was about three miles....The area around the crater was filled with yellow flowers. You enter the crater from the south side. Once in the crater there is a trail around the...  more »

  • Let me just say, the drive to the creator is very scenic! The Crater itself is huge! About a mile long in circumference! If you plan on hiking this thing be sure to bring plenty of water! Temperatures can climb into the 90s so be precautious!
  • Weirdly beautiful! It really is like being on a different planet. The hike to the top of the cone rim is worth it and is much easier than it looks from the bottom. After you pass the sitting area at the base of the cone, the trail rounds to the back where the side of the cone was blown off. This makes it much easier. You don’t have to climb up a steep ascent straight up the side of the cone. You have a short climb into the cone, then there are multiple trails up to the rim. Take lots of water. It gets hotter as you near the cone. Wear hiking boots. There is soft sand on the trail to the cone, and loose lava rock up the side of the cone. There is cellular signal inside the cone! 😉
  • Such a cool mystical place with stunning colors and beauty. A must see if you are within an hour radius.
  • Short hike to the rim, don't recommend doing this during summer. No shade
  • We have camped here over-night 2 times now, in our RV. It is BLM managed, and well kept, including the standard pit-toilets often found in National Parks, Monuments, etc. As the start of a Route 66 road-trip, or other trip east, this is a good place to stop; be well provisioned, however, as there is little around if you are in need of any goods. The hike to the crater is not long or difficult, although some spots are sandy and the last part to the rim is a little steep. Be cautious in the heat; it gets very hot, and hiking early or late in the day is recommended. Remember to carry your essentials! Even on this short hike!
