Prairie Meadows is a Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racetrack casino located in Altoona, Iowa, United States.History and informationIn 1984, Prairie Meadows received a license from the Iowa Racing and Gaming commission to operate a horse racing facility after parimutuel betting was legalized by the state the previous year. In 1987, groundbreaking ceremonies were held for Prairie Meadows.Prairie Meadows conducted its first day of racing on March 1, 1989. However, the track lost money during its first few years of operation and filed for bankruptcy in November 1991. • Prairie Meadows is a clean, fun, and great place to visit. They have non smoking areas and are constantly upgrading. The live races are exciting to attend and I've done pretty well betting the ponies!  more »

  • First visit to this casino. Has a huge selection of slot machines in all denominations. All employees encountered on the gaming floor were very nice and pleasant. Lots of room to move around as well. ...  more »
  • Although I'm not much of a gambler, I like to go to PM for food and the occasional horse race to watch. They have several options for food ranging from cheap and fast and higher end, fancy. I love that there is a blue bunny ice cream bar and Starbucks in it too. I've never had a problem with service either. Compared to casinos in places like Chicago, PM is a little more friendly on the wallet, in my opinion but that's coming from someone who doesn't gamble. I'm mostly a fan of Prime Rib night on Friday so if you had to choose a night to go, Friday is the night!
  • Nicely and newly remodeled. Good chance at winning at the slots. I have won several times any where from $100-$2500. The show lounge is where the free entertainment reigns. Music ranging from 40's-current chandra depending on the night . The food is really good, too. I generally fine at the buffet. The steak house is also good. Go, you'll have a good time.
  • Had fun at the horse track and won in the casino. Love the variety of slot machines. This place is always clean. Plenty of restrooms and ticket machines. Shuttle to parking runs often. Haven't stayed at hotel yet.
  • I enjoy coming out to Prairie Meadows, but being a non-smoker it is nasty to go to the slots with it being so smokey. I go a couple times a years here. I wish they would bring boxing back to Prairie Meadows. Outside matches are great so the boxers and fans can stay out of the smoke. Have seen some good bands over the years. If the smoke was less of an issue I would come 4-6 times a year plus special events.
  • Stopped here to eat because they have a nice truck parking lot. The buffet was not very good. Desert was the best part. If you get there when the cafe is open it's better, but they have strange hours. Next time we'll try the steakhouse.
