Prairie Meadows is a Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racetrack casino located in Altoona, Iowa, United States.History and informationIn 1984, Prairie Meadows received a license from the Iowa Racing and Gaming commission to operate a horse racing facility after parimutuel betting was legalized by the state the previous year. In 1987, groundbreaking ceremonies were held for Prairie Meadows.Prairie Meadows conducted its first day of racing on March 1, 1989. However, the track lost money during its first few years of operation and filed for bankruptcy in November 1991. Live racing was suspended for the 1992 season before revenues from off-track betting allowed racing to resume the following year.On May 17, 1994, Polk County voters approved a referendum allowing the installation of slot machines at Prairie Meadows. On April 1, 1995, the slot machine casino opened at Prairie Meadows, and by the end of 1996, Prairie Meadows was able to pay off the bonds that were issued by the Polk County Board of Supervisors. On December 14, 2004, Prairie Meadows added casino game tables after receiving state approval to do so. As a result of the high demand for these tables, the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission approved Prairie Meadows' plans to expand its facility on January 25, 2005. Construction on the $60 million expansion began in September 2005. An addition to the casino opened in August 2006, while two new restaurants and a 1,200-seat concert hall known as "The Meadows" opened in February 2007.

  • We visited here on a weekend trip and went on 3 different occasions during that trip. We had a fantastic time, each visit! This is the least smokey casino I have ever been in. There are smokers there,...  more »

  • Very accommodating. Large smoking and non smoking table areas. Extremely nice front desk that went out of their way to help me. Drinks aren't free. Free breakfast buffet every morning. I won a free dinner buffet that was good. Won a free steakhouse meal that was excellent. Good rewards program so get a players card. They even have a few smoking rooms. Very nice place. Only miss 1 star because you're only allowed 2 doubles a day. Pit boss prints out 2 free drinks a day though. I would highly recommend and will be back.
  • Been to P.M. floor the Christmas buffet two years in a row and have been very satisfied each time. Food was excellent and the selection was outstanding. Having reservations this year allowed us to skip the long line, which made the experience even more enjoyable!
  • A solid casino with a large non-smoking slots section. Almost all table games are in the smoking area and there's a good variety of minimum bets, so it's not a bad place to try a new game for the first time. Also a good variety of fast and slow dealers so you can find what feels like a good pace to you.
  • It is a wonderful place for gathering with a group. The Buffet was awesome. There are many places within that you can be in a sports bar. You can gather to in a very inviting bar where you are away from all the hustle of the Casino and it has a roomy, comfortable seating it makes you feel like home.
  • We had an awesome experience staying, eating and playing over the weekend. From the easy check-in to retrieving new players cards at kiosk and then the helpful staff (Kelvin on casino floor knows it all!). The bartenders were friendly, maybe another one at each station be helpful for the long lines. Rosie at Triple Crown Buffet was very pleasant to be almost first person to see in the mornings. Restaurant manager (can't remember his name)at the Cafe was soooo informative and yes, the ribs were delicious. Just an overall great experience! Thank you and we'll definitely be back.
