PPL Center is a sports arena in Allentown, Pennsylvania that opened on September 10, 2014. Its naming rights are owned by the PPL Corporation, which is headquartered in Allentown. PPL paid an undisclosed sum over 10 years.OverviewThe arena is part of a larger redevelopment project of the central business district of Allentown. The project encompasses a 5-acre square block area, in which several new structures are planned to be erected: Part of the arena site was previously developed in the 1990s as an office building called Corporate Plaza; shortly after opening, on February 23, 1994, it collapsed into a sinkhole, due to limestone in the ground and the decision to not place the building on a concrete pad, but rather on spread footings; the plaza was imploded on March 19 of that year. Inside the arena will be a new ground-floor studio that will house WFMZ-TV's news operation.Competition on building sitesRebuilding an arena on the site of the Spectrum in Philadelphia was rejected in favor of the more profitable Xfinity Live! project and a new 180-room Renaissance by Marriott hotel. The competition to build a new arena for the Phantoms in 2008 was primarily between Allentown and Camden, New Jersey. While Camden was closer, Allentown had a more elaborate proposal which helped secure Allentown's bid for the team.Plans to build the PPL Center at the corner of 7th and Hamilton Streets in downtown Allentown were announced in late 2009. For much of 2009 and 2010, the focus of the project was on securing funding. The project took a major leap forward in 2011, when several properties were purchased by the city to help clear the way for the project to begin. By the end of January 2012, all of the properties had been purchased with final demolition of all buildings occurring in early February 2012.

  • This a great center. Well built and all of the seats are great. I've sat in the box seats and down in the rows and had great views. Yes there are bars there. Expect average stadium prices for beer, food and souvenirs.
  • Very cool venu. Been to a few events here including a Phantoms game, Marvel the Musical, and Monster Truck Show. All were excellent for the kid in everyone!
  • The shows at the PPL Center are top notch. We went to Marvel Live and Disney on Ice. The parking decks are to be desired and the crowd control by the security at the entrance needs to be better, but the facilities were create. The whol arena was clean and well kept. The seats are comfortable and every seat has a good view. The concession areas are wide open an there are lots of areas to go.
  • Parking is not ideal. Elevators were not functioning so it was hard in the parking deck for my mother to walk down three flights of stairs. However, the arena is gorgeous. You are never on top of others while on the concourse. There are no obstructed view seats. It's a beautifully designed building inside and out. Seats are comfortable and the staff is more than accommodating. The place is very affordable for events. Only 4 stars because parking could be better.
  • The venue is great to watch a hockey game. Unfortunately there aren't enough bathrooms and the hall ways are cramped if the arena is full. Beer prices are way to expensive when compared to other venues. But I guess I don't have to drink if I don't like the prices either. It is nice that they have 4 entrances but the longest wait is to get past security.
