The New York State Capitol is the capitol building of the U.S. state of New York. Housing the New York State Legislature, it is located in the state capital city Albany as part of the Empire State Plaza on State Street in Capitol Park. The building was completed in 1899 at a cost of $25 million, making it the most expensive government building of its time. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, then included as a contributing property when the Lafayette Park Historic District was listed in 1978. The following year it was declared a National Historic Landmark.HistoryLegislative sessions had been held at different buildings in different places before Albany was declared the State capital in 1797. From that time until 1811, the State Legislature met at the Old Albany City Hall. The first State Capitol was inaugurated in 1812 and remained in use until 1879 when the current building was inaugurated. The present Capitol was built between 1867 and 1899. Three teams of architects worked on the design of the Capitol during the 32 years of its construction. They were managed by: 1867-75: Thomas Fuller, 1875–83: Leopold Eidlitz and Henry Hobson Richardson, 1883-99: Isaac G. Perry. Fuller, the initial architect, was an Englishman who also designed the Canadian Parliament buildings of Parliament Hill, Ottawa.

  • First of all if you go to the streets deserted me on Saturday and Sunday will include a lot of quiet administrative buildings are closed. For a long time without having to get around quickly. Saturday and Sunday street parking is free; you can also park anywhere. Not a lot of tourists taking photos of a part

  • I can stare at this beautiful building for hours. I want to visit Albany so bad, I live in NYC.
  • It's the most magnificent State Capitol in the country, and may rival the National Capitol. It's a unique structure of Renaissance revival architecture, with touches of Romanesque. the interior blends a unique cornucopia of styles that need to be seen to believed. It is literally a palace, and the history within it's walls must be explored.
  • Probably one of the most beautiful and unique government buildings in the U.S.! An architectural nirvana that must be seen in order to really appreciate its awesome, stylistic, and grand design. Definitely worth the trip to Albany to see it. This is what one would expect to find in the "Empire State". I would add a + to it's Five Star rating! The adjacent Empire State Plaza contains a very impressive set of marble-clad office towers, as well as the New York State Library and Museum.
  • Never min the corruption ;) there are free tours! One of Americas most ornate and magnificent buildings. A must see.
  • My favorite state and Albany is. A city of the most beautiful parks each and every one is fantastic.
