The Erastus Corning Tower, also known as the Mayor Erastus Corning 2nd Tower or simply the Corning Tower, is a skyscraper located in downtown Albany, New York. Completed in 1966 and sided with Vermont Pearl marble and glass, the state office building is part of the Empire State Plaza. At 589 feet (180 m) and 44 stories in height, it is the tallest skyscraper in the state of New York outside of the city of New York. Erastus Corning 2nd, the building's namesake, was the mayor of Albany for over 40 years from 1941 to 1983. The tower was dedicated to him in March 1983 during his hospitalization. Before that dedication, it was known as the "Tower Building".The Corning Tower houses the New York State Department of Health and the New York State Office of General Services. Two New York State Department of Transportation traffic cameras are located on the building to monitor nearby traffic conditions. From 2000 to 2004, it was the tallest structure in the World Almanac's list of "Other Tall Buildings in North American Cities".Observation deckAn observation deck is located on the Corning Tower's 42nd floor. It offers expansive views of Albany, the Hudson River, and the surrounding area. Panels below the windows give information about the visible landmarks. The observation deck, however, does not feature a 360-degree view because it has no windows on the west side. A nonstop elevator to the 42nd floor reaches a speed of 26 km/h (16 MPH). The deck is open to the public for free Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Visitors can access the observation deck, by the plaza or concourse levels. Upon taking office in 2010, Governor Andrew Cuomo eliminated that photo ID requirement.Add Erastus Corning Tower to your Albany travel itinerary, and discover new vacation ideas by using our Albany trip site .

Leave it to NYS to design a tower with only a 270 degree view; most of Albany cannot be seen from the so-called "observation deck." To add to the insult, it's closed on weekends and evenings. For real... more »

I enjoyed looking around at this venue and the lift ride to the top of the building was fast and it was great to walk around and see the great vierws of the city. I was fortunate to have a reasonable ... more »

Outdoor plaza (Empire State Plaza) accommodates all sorts of activities and events throughout the year - music festivals, Christmas tree lighting, winter ice skating, etc. The tower itself offers fantastic views of the capital region and is a place I love to bring visitors or people who are new to the area. You can park on the street and walk straight into the tower itself to get to the elevator that will swiftly take you to the observation deck, or park underneath the plaza, take the elevator to the concourse, and follow the signs. If you park underneath the concourse, it usually costs $5. If you're there for under half an hour, they refund your $5.

The building and it's surroundings are very clean and pleasing, and the observation desk provides a great view of the city.
-
Beautiful outdoor plaza. Great for a nice walk on a warm summer day. Inner concourse area has the feel of a spacious art gallery entrance.
-
You can go all the way to the top and see the whole city.
-
The observation deck offers extensive views of Albany, it's really cool. You can't look out the North side but that's alright. Also, it's free! The building itself isn't the best looking but it really stands out as a symbol of Albany.
