Chehaw Park is a park and zoo located in Albany, Georgia. The park was originally opened as Chehaw State Park in 1937, and currently covers 800acre. The Wild Animal Park was designed by naturalist Jim Fowler of television's Wild Kingdom. Fowler is originally from Albany, Georgia. It was opened in 1997, and features boardwalks in the cypress swamps that take visitors through natural habitat exhibits.Chehaw is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 1997. It is one of only two accredited zoos in the state of Georgia.HistoryOriginally developed as Chehaw State Park in 1937, the property consisted of donated to the state of Georgia by private landowners in Albany, Georgia. It is enclosed on two sides by a large, clear water bayou formed where the Kinchafoonee Creek and Muckalee Creeks meet. The property has expanded to nearly and consists of moss-covered subtropical cypress swamps, climax hardwood forests, and burn-controlled pine/wiregrass habitat. The park is named for the Chiha, or Chehaw, a tribe of Creek Native Americans who inhabited around the property and befriended Caucasian settlers. • I loved everything about this place. Everything there was so interesting. There was so much to see and do. Very hands on, many sights and I could go multiple times and still see something I missed.  more »

  • I enjoy going here but the zoo portion really needs work. 1. It's a long walk through the zoo. Be prepared by using the bathroom before entering, wearing comfortable clothes and shoes, and bring something to drink. 2. There's a few buildings in the zoo area that look abandoned. It's an eyesore. 3. The trails really need to be replaced. Especially the wooden ones. It was very difficult to navigate a stroller on some of the trails. Many boards seemed like they were about to give away. 4. Many displays and viewing areas are dirty and faded. 5. A lot of trash cans turned over as if to say don't use. I needed to throw something away but I held on to it. 6. There isn't as many animals as their used to be. Many areas look overgrown with weeds. 7. The cafe area could do so much better than fries and sodas. It could have great potential. 8. A motorized tour of the whole zoo would be great. I think they offer a small tour of certain animals but not the whole zoo. I would pay decent fee for someone to drive my family around and tell us about the animals rather than fight with the walkways and the stroller. 9. The petting zoo was nice but the cow in there seemed miserable. Maybe an off day? 10. The parking lot really needs to be repaved. And the Christmas decorations need to go.
  • Only slightly annoying part was the amount of gnats. But that is Georgia for you. Great campsites in the woods with large burnpits. They only allow you to burn their wood though. There is a zoo attached which is awesome. Prices were super cheap. Only gave 4 stars because of bugs and sections of grass were fairly tall which I believe added to bug population around campsites.
  • We love visiting Chehaw... Great bike trails. We always enjoyed camping too! Zoo is informative. There's so much to do.... Overall Chehaw is not too big or too small. We are now members. :)
  • One of our favorite places to go on the weekend. We've been annual-pass holders for a few years now, and we'll be doing that for the foreseeable future. Shaded and relaxing, with a wonderful staff.
  • Excellent park with zoo and nature trails. Over night camping, biking close to water sports, even has a Really nice RC careful and Truck course.
