USS Hornet Museum, Alameda

#1 of 11 in Things to do in Alameda
Experience the life of a sailor at USS Hornet Museum, the aircraft carrier that participated in the Apollo 11 space mission. Ask a docent to show you where President Nixon watched the recovery operation of the Apollo 11 crew. You can even spend the night on the ship, sleeping in bunk beds and eating in the crew's mess. Exhibits include documents from the moon exploration missions, aircraft from the 1940s through the 1980s, and helicopters. To learn more about the history of the ship, watch a short video in the orientation area. Be prepared to descend some steep stairs to get into the ship's engineering spaces. • Absolutely amazing experience. You can tell these guys have a passion for this museum. If you've ever been to a WW2 ship museum before and only a small part of the ship is open, this is not one of them. Most of the vessel is open along with most of the important compartments. The sheer size of the Essex class carrier is on display and well worth a visit for any person looking for a trip back in time.
  • Monster Bash was a great date with my wife. Dancing, adult refreshments, ghost tour and haunted sick bay/ zombies were an entertaining evening. Will do it again. The ship exhibits were interesting and I will see them on a regular visit day.
  • An amazing piece of history that makes for an extremely interesting visit. I would highly recommend having a guided tour as all the staff are former sailors and you are taken to otherwise restricted areas of the vessel. The only problem is that it is hard (but not impossible) to reach with public transport and there is a distinct lack of sign posts. Maybe a few more items in the shop as well? However, I really enjoyed visiting and think that people should go out of their way to pay the Hornet a visit.
  • Best views of the city! Great docent tours. Right around the corner from Rock Wall and other great food and drink options.
  • This museum is a gem in Alameda! I have done tours on naval ships before, but this experience was head and shoulders above the rest. We went on one guided tour of the control tower, which was fascinating. Also, we stumbled across a docent who wasn't currently leading a tour. He took at least half an hour to show us all around the flight deck, explaining in detail how the catapults worked, where the signal lights are, and all about his experience as a fighter pilot. Our entire visit was incredibly informative and memorable. Special kudos to our unofficial guide.
