Otter Cliff, Acadia National Park

#7 of 10 in Nature in Mount Desert Island
Geologic Formation Nature / Park
Take a peaceful coastal stroll and absorb expansive views over the vast ocean at Otter Cliff. From here you’re presented with fabulous photo opportunities, as countless boulders lining the shoreline emerge from beneath the water during low tide. Formerly serving as the United States Navy's radio facility, the natural rock formation rises 6.63 m (21 ft) above the level of the water, making it one of the highest coastal headlands north of Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro. By using our Acadia National Park vacation route planner, you can arrange your visit to Otter Cliff and other attractions in Acadia National Park.

  • The outermost part of the ocean path where there is much less crowded and where we can walk on the rocks. In addition, this parking is accessible directly without going through the whole of the Park loop road: from route 3 between Otter Creek and Bar Harbor, take the Otter Cliffs road near the first village. The Park Loop Road for less than a kilometer and turn right into the parking lot of Otter Cliffs, at the end of the tip. To fly Park Loop, turn to the Fabbri picnic area right after the exit of the parking lot. Wear good shoes to walk in safety.

  • Must stop! Plenty of places to walk on the rocks, get pictures and just take in all the beauty. Right off the Park Loop road.  more »

Where to stay in Acadia National Park

A few campgrounds sit inside the boundaries of Acadia National Park. Camping is available in the park throughout the year, but most campgrounds are only open during summer. There are plenty of campgrounds around Mt. Desert Island, on which Acadia sits, and more located on the mainland within easy driving distance of the bridge to the island. For creature comforts, a lively atmosphere, and easy access to the park, look for a hotel, inn, or bed and breakfast in bustling Bar Harbor, which also has restaurants and shops. Quieter Northeast Harbor, which actually sits on the southwest corner of Mt. Desert Island, has a few quaint inns and bed and breakfasts that offer a more rustic experience than staying in Bar Harbor. If you plan to visit Acadia in summer, book your accommodation as far in advance as possible.
