Kurt Cobain Memorial Park, Aberdeen

#2 of 6 in Things to do in Aberdeen
Kurt Cobain Memorial Park, also called Kurt Cobain Landing, is the first official, full-scale memorial to Kurt Cobain in his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. A welcome sign to the city, placed in 2005, more than ten years after Cobain's death, obliquely says "come as you are" but does not mention him by name and was the first official recognition of Cobain. The park, initially built in Felony Flats on city-owned land near his Aberdeen home in 2011, and maintained by local volunteers as Kurt Cobain Landing, was adopted by the city of Aberdeen in 2015, 20 years after his death. As recently as 2011, a motion not to rename the adjacent Young Street Bridge after Cobain was applauded at a city council meeting. The lyrics of the Nirvana song "Something in the Way" are about the Young Street Bridge. The lyrics to the song are etched on an aluminum plaque posted in the park.A granite memorial headstone with Cobain quotes rests in the park. Part of one of the quotes was sandblasted away because the city mayor found the phrase " will fuck you up" offensive.

  • Going to the spot where Kurt Cobain got inspiration for the chilling song "Something In The Way" on their Sophomore Album "Nevermind" and where he would spend alone time was something that gave me goosebumps up my entire body.
  • As a 90s kid, this was a really neat visit. There's not really much here aside from the pictures provided but as a long time nirvana fan I enjoyed my visit.
  • This is a raw no frills tribute to Kurt Cobain. There is street parking only. You can walk around, and really get a feeling of him being there as a teen making music. It will give a feel of where depression can come from. If you can take yourself there it will give you chills!
  • Kurt Cobain actually was there before he was famous, isn't that reason enough for it to be an amazing place, you can actually feel his presence. Awesome.
  • Crazy little bit of rock and roll history. It's the size of somebody's backyard and you'll probably find a stolen bicycle and a few use needles around, but it's kind of interesting.
