Kurt Cobain Memorial Park, Aberdeen

#2 of 8 in Things to do in Aberdeen
Kurt Cobain Memorial Park, also called Kurt Cobain Landing, is the first official, full-scale memorial to Kurt Cobain in his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. A welcome sign to the city, placed in 2005, more than ten years after Cobain's death, obliquely says "come as you are" but does not mention him by name and was the first official recognition of Cobain. The park, initially built in Felony Flats on city-owned land near his Aberdeen home in 2011, and maintained by local volunteers as Kurt Cobain Landing, was adopted by the city of Aberdeen in 2015, 20 years after his death. As recently as 2011, a motion not to rename the adjacent Young Street Bridge after Cobain was applauded at a city council meeting. The lyrics of the Nirvana song "Something in the Way" are about the Young Street Bridge. The lyrics to the song are etched on an aluminum plaque posted in the park.A granite memorial headstone with Cobain quotes rests in the park. Part of one of the quotes was sandblasted away because the city mayor found the phrase " will fuck you up" offensive.

  • The monument is at the base of the bridge. You have to get here through the residential streets. Use google maps or apple maps it has the correct directions. Its an interesting start.  more »
  • My family was on our way to Olympic National Park and were passing through Aberdeen. It seemed like we had to stop and pay tribute to Kurt Cobain. This park is very small and a bit hokey. But somehow ...  more »

  • Great place! True reality of Kurt's childhood to growing up. The park is run down with homeless people doing drugs and living under the bridge. We walked through, took pics and even talked to the homeless people. They're actually quite nice and mean no harm. Definitely one to check off the bucket list. RIP Kurt
  • Not as cool as I thought, basically a guitar and a sign saying it's a bad area and its not his house and his is down the street. Also that area gives off a bad vibe. I see why he went out the way he did.
  • The park is very small and intimate. I wish the park better maintained... the grass was overgrown. It was as if his memory was forgotten. This is a cool spot to check out if your driving through.
  • My grand daughter is a big Kurt Cobains fan she, just loved it waz the highlight of her life
  • Not worth it. The neighbors hate you coming into their property. Still cool to see. His wife killed him.
