Yorkshire Museum, York

#8 of 27 in Museums in York
You'll find four permanent exhibits of artifacts at Yorkshire Museum. The archaeology exhibit houses a collection of nearly one million objects, ranging from prehistoric times to the 20th century. Among them, spot the York helmet, the Gilling sword, and a head of preserved Roman hair. In the astronomy exhibit, visit the 19th-century observatory and a clock that tells the time based on the position of constellations. A biology exhibit displays preserved specimens of animals, plants, and fungi, including specimens of extinct species, such as the passenger pigeon and the Moa. Marvel at the collection of minerals, rocks, and fossils in the geology exhibit. Outside, wander through the museum gardens. Plan my trip to York with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

  • You can spend a fair amount of time in this place. There are many exhibits to see and underneath there is a Victorian street which gives you an idea of what it was like then.  more »

  • Great museum with fascinating objects. I love the street scene exhibit in particular. However, some of the more modern eras are not interpreted so well to my mind as they lack the York connection to the same extent.
  • Although a tad expensive with concessionary tickets at £4.00 only for those under age 25 we found the museum to be well worth the visit with exhibits well laid out and concise explanatory detail applied to everything. As many of the visitors were foreign the thought did occur that all signage was in English which, whilst great for ourselves, may have detracted from the experience for the majority. All in all an enjoyable visit which, in retrospect, was excellent value.
  • Great museum with a modern, fresh and airy feel. Lots of great educational visuals for kids to learn about various aspects in history. There was a theme around sea animals, dinosaurs and Romans that the kids could explore. They even got the chance to dress up as Romans and an art activity in making stained glass windows! Highly recommended. The pictures are within the art gallery which is worth a visit too.
  • Some great exhibits from all the way back before the Romans. Plenty of stone arrowheads, hand axes and even the oldest known artwork in the British Isles. Add in bronze swords and Roman artefacts and you can see why it's a popular museum to visit. £7 each for us which is pricey for what's essentially a small exhibition. We had to tell ourselves that the park over the road was part of the price lol.
  • Excellent Viking exhibition. Well set out with highly knowledgeable and friendly staff.
