Where to stay in York

Despite York’s relatively small size, accommodations come in a variety of styles. You can choose from privately owned townhouses, low-cost hotels, luxurious international chains, and quiet B&Bs and guesthouses. For that ultimate urban experience, consider staying in the historical city center. This part of town is packed with options for every taste and budget, all close to York’s main attractions, as well as its main transportation systems. Just a short walk from the city center, family-run guesthouses in quiet neighborhoods offer cozy rooms and modern amenities at a fraction of the cost of the big hotel chains. Alternatively, the surrounding countryside is filled with charming private homes eager to welcome guests.

  • The Shambles Market is situated in the heart of the city centre. It is just a five minute walk from the York Minster. It is a historic market open 7 days a week, with over 80 stalls to browse through....  more »

  • Very pleasant traditional market, all of the stalls you might expect with perhaps an emphasis on food and clothes. Really nice to have a wander if the weather is nice, however the only possible complaint might be that it can get incredibly busy at times. So be prepared to get jostled around.
  • A good and regular traditional market right in the centre of York. From food to hats to wood carving, a record store and clothing all surrounded by the historic city and main shopping area. Always busy and a great place to go. And don't forget Gert and Henrys for that special Italian meal!
  • Wonderful little market. Serves a wonderful mix or foods. My partner had vegan, I had Indian and my daughter's had cakes and crepes. Even managed to get an earl grey with soya milk!
  • This is a great market. There is a guy there who makes little dragons and cows that looks like they are smoking.. so cute and so funny!
  • Absolutely love traditional markets like this. York is a beautiful city and this market just adds to the authenticity. I went at Christmas was it had all Christmas stalls and was such a good day. Hoping to go again soon to see what it's like in the Spring. Would recommend to anyone that likes original and quirky places whilst still keeping that traditional feel
