Jorvik Viking Centre, York

#4 of 248 in Museums in Yorkshire
A popular time warp experience, Jorvik Viking Centre includes excavations that first revealed the ancient city of York, a settlement from the age of the Vikings. Over 40,000 artifacts were discovered at this location, which now offers tourists a chance to see 1,000-year-old houses and backyards right beneath their feet. The center also features lifelike animated Viking figures, based on skulls found in a Viking cemetery and modeled using advanced facial reconstruction technology. Take a tour of a recreated Viking settlement before moving on to the museum area, which combines an exhibit of some 800 finds from the archeological site with interactive displays and special talks by the "Viking" staff. A visit to Jorvik Viking Centre represents just the start of the adventure when you use our York trip planner to plot your vacation.

  • When you first go in you can see through a glass floor the remains of the Viking settlement and the guides know everything about it! They can tell you exactly what the family who lived in the house...  more »
  • This was by far the highlight of our trip! It was just incredible and to be able to go through an entire viking village replica with outstanding attention to detail was so much fun. I'm actually...  more »
  • This place is great if you have an interest in Vikings. The ride is really interesting but the museum afterwards where you get to see authentic items is brilliant. The skeletons that they have...  more »
  • The Viking center is so fun and educational. You go on a little “ride” through a Viking city that shows a day in the life. We were able to take our 9 month old on it. It ends with a museum showcasing Viking remains and artifacts. It’s a true gem!
  • Slightly disappointed with this as a day out with the grandchildren, however I must say that this could be because of their ages (one is 3 and the other is 4 yrs). They enjoyed the ride but perhaps not enough for their age group perhaps, or this may just be my opinion. We would recommend but perhaps for older children.
  • Staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful. Have a lovely baby changing room and got me a chair so I could sit and breast feed my baby. Good pram storage. The attraction itself was awesome, really well made and super interesting. The ride was very fun :) some awesome bits in the gift shop as well. So worth the money 👍
  • It seems obvious to recommend this place, but there's nothing like it in York. If you visit the city, but didn't go here, you're missing out. The initial waiting area feels a bit confused, although the recordings of the actual archaeologists who worked there give a fascinating background into the discovery. It needs clearer signposting to guide visitors to the ride, but once you're there the automated tour round the recreated Jorvik village is informative, fun, and easy to to follow. The second part of the Centre, with actual artifacts in display with historical info, might benefit from more of it being moved to the first section. Other than that, it's a wonderful place.
  • A great place to learn about the History and York and Vikings. A unique experience so far for me and can see it being very entertaining and educational for children. Tickets are valid for a full year.
