Where to stay in York

Despite York’s relatively small size, accommodations come in a variety of styles. You can choose from privately owned townhouses, low-cost hotels, luxurious international chains, and quiet B&Bs and guesthouses. For that ultimate urban experience, consider staying in the historical city center. This part of town is packed with options for every taste and budget, all close to York’s main attractions, as well as its main transportation systems. Just a short walk from the city center, family-run guesthouses in quiet neighborhoods offer cozy rooms and modern amenities at a fraction of the cost of the big hotel chains. Alternatively, the surrounding countryside is filled with charming private homes eager to welcome guests.

  • What a gem. Came here again with guests for the Easter egg hunt, which the kids loved. The windmill is really special, given it is effectively in the city and is in working condition. You get to learn...  more »
  • Who would have thought there would be a windmill in the middle of a housing estate on the outskirts of York? Well we didn't, and so glad we popped up to have a look. Unfortunately for us entry to the ...  more »

  • First windmill I've ever been too. So interesting to see how it works + used to work. It's so cute! Flour is still ground there every once in a while and unfortunately working a windmill is becoming somewhat of a lost art. The volunteers there were so knowledgable and passionate in saving this piece of history. I hope places like these stay preserved.
  • These guys have done great work to make this windmill a go to place in York. The minster is impressive but this has been restored by volunteers with love. They staff the place on open days and their knowledge is second to none. Well worth a visit.
  • The woman who was showing us around was very sweet and genuinely excited about the windmill and it's history. It's very cool to go up to the top floor.
  • This beautifully restored windmill is located in the middle of a housing estate (though to be fair, the windmill was there first). The volunteers who staff it are friendly and knowledgeable. You need to be reasonably physically able if you want to climb up the levels inside, but the effort is worth it. As well as being able to view the mechanism in the windmill the views across the City of York are fantastic. Check the website for opening times.
  • It is lovely to see a bit of history working - the Holgate Windmill is no exception. Formally surrounded by small holdings, it is now perched on Holgate Hill surrounded by semi-detached houses which gives it a surreal backdrop but to watch the sails going round and to know it is still producing flour is somewhat comforting. Go and look! The is a fee at the door to help towards the upkeep but for price of a pint, go and be nosey!!
