Yarmouth Castle, Yarmouth

#5 of 9 in Things to do in Yarmouth
Historic Site Tourist Spot
This was the last and most sophisticated addition to Henry VIII's coastal defences; it was completed after his death in 1547, with the first new-style 'arrowhead' artillery bastion built in England.

Yarmouth Castle, Isle of Wight provides a magnificent picnic spot, with views over the Solent for a lovely relaxing family day by the sea. Step inside and discover the atmospheric recreation of how the rooms were used in the 16th century, and see the exhibition about the many wrecks which occurred in the treacherous stretch of sea which the castle overlooks.

  • You could easily miss this castle hidden away down an alley near the harbour. Good views out to sea and interesting to see how the castle was used as defences.  more »

  • there's loads of history in Yarmouth & Yarmouth Castle has a lot to offer his or buffs (kids will love the cannons & all the little stairways. worth an hour if you're in the vicinity. bit of a challenge to disabled/limited mobility people though.
  • Really enjoyed my visit. It's quite a small castle, easily visited in under 30 minutes. It's not very imposing but well preserved and has a lot of information on it's history.
  • A quaint liltlw castle. Staff very helpfull.
  • Not much of a castle, more like a green humock with a few stones. Nice views of the sea etc but not much to look at I'm afraid
  • Interesting yet small castle with good views from the outer walls, great location but not a lot to see inside, would recommend if you have an English heritage membership, otherwise not
