Yarmouth Castle, Yarmouth

3.6
#6 of 14 in Things to do in Yarmouth
This was the last and most sophisticated addition to Henry VIII's coastal defences; it was completed after his death in 1547, with the first new-style 'arrowhead' artillery bastion built in England.

Yarmouth Castle, Isle of Wight provides a magnificent picnic spot, with views over the Solent for a lovely relaxing family day by the sea. Step inside and discover the atmospheric recreation of how the rooms were used in the 16th century, and see the exhibition about the many wrecks which occurred in the treacherous stretch of sea which the castle overlooks.

  • What a little gem tucked away by the ferry. Very enthusiastically run by the lovely luan
  • It is a fascinating structure which exudes history. It's proximity to the ferry terminal creates an interesting juxtaposition of old and new, with the purpose of its construction being to repel strangers usurped by the installation of the very place where strangers arrive in droves!
  • there's loads of history in Yarmouth & Yarmouth Castle has a lot to offer his or buffs (kids will love the cannons & all the little stairways. worth an hour if you're in the vicinity. bit of a challenge to disabled/limited mobility people though.
  • Interesting place to visit, info boards & some things for kids to do as well.
  • Really enjoyed my visit. It's quite a small castle, easily visited in under 30 minutes. It's not very imposing but well preserved and has a lot of information on it's history.
