Winchester Castle - The Great Hall, Winchester

4.4
#2 of 13 in Sightseeing in Winchester
Castle Historic Site
Founded in 1067, Winchester Castle - The Great Hall remains a testament to almost a millennia of history. The castle houses one of the finest surviving medieval halls, where a replica of King Arthur's famous round table sits. King Henry III--born in the castle--added the great hall between 1222 and 1235, which stands as the only remaining interior part of the castle after Oliver Cromwell's destruction. Take advantage of the exhibition corridor behind the gift shop to learn more of the history of the castle. Stroll around Queen Eleanor's garden featuring plants with symbolic meaning in medieval times. The castle is accessible by train at Winchester station, a ten-minute walk, or by the Tower Street car park, a five-minute walk. Admission is free, but the castle trust gladly accepts donations on entry. • The Great Hall is the only remaining part of the mediaeval Winchester Castle. It is a large space, particularly dominated by the (so-called) Round Table of King Arthur. The information along the walls...  more »

  • If like me you enjoy visiting castles/old buildings etc. then this is definitely worth a quick visit if you are in Winchester. It is rather small but beautiful. The small garden attached is a little gem of tranquility, the round table/King Arthur link seems a little strained but good fun.
  • I really love this place it is so lovely to have a visit even if it is just one room it is filled with so much interesting and intriguing history. Already been twice in past few months but I would gladly go back and visit anytime! Also very friendly and helpful staff who really make you feel welcome.
  • Interesting to see but not lots to do. Special events can be interesting.
  • Great place to visit whilst you're in Winchester. No entrance fee but voluntary suggested donation of £2-3. Very interesting place with beautiful stained glass and wall murals, but also fun for the little ones - they have costumes to dress up in and let their imagination run wild! Lots of exhibitions to wander around, and nice garden with water feature. Fun little gift shop with themed gifts, too.
  • A lovely place to pop into. £3 suggested donation and £3 for an optional guidebook. Obviously, the Round Table is the main attraction, but the garden at the rear is a small, but peaceful place, and the exhibition in the Long Gallery has lots of information about the old Castle and surrounding area.

Where to stay in Winchester

Hotels, B&Bs, and inns offer rooms on the upper floors of the historical town center's Victorian, Georgian, and Tudor buildings. These look out over the pedestrian streets, markets, and shops, as well as provide a convenient location to the main attractions. Cottages for rent near the River Itchen are set among thick trees near the water, but are still within walking distance of many of the city attractions.
