Categories: Castles, Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
Founded in 1067, Winchester Castle - The Great Hall remains a testament to almost a millennia of history. The castle houses one of the finest surviving medieval halls, where a replica of King Arthur's famous round table sits. King Henry III--born in the castle--added the great hall between 1222 and 1235, which stands as the only remaining interior part of the castle after Oliver Cromwell's destruction. Take advantage of the exhibition corridor behind the gift shop to learn more of the history of the castle. Stroll around Queen Eleanor's garden featuring plants with symbolic meaning in medieval times. The castle is accessible by train at Winchester station, a ten-minute walk, or by the Tower Street car park, a five-minute walk. Admission is free, but the castle trust gladly accepts donations on entry. Interesting place to visit loads to read. Really wanted to see the round table and the windows etc were good to see . Disappointed by garden....small and not as spectacular as I expected....perhaps wrong time of year? On the whole, worth £3 donation though.
Amazing piece of English History including the round table, beautiful medieval garden, and Queen Victoria statue. Worth a visit along with the East gate museum! Free with a donation... What more could you ask for...
