The Great Hall, Winchester

4.3
#2 of 8 in Historic Sites in Winchester
Founded in 1067, The Great Hall remains a testament to almost a millennia of history. The castle houses one of the finest surviving medieval halls, where a replica of King Arthur's famous round table sits. King Henry III--born in the castle--added the great hall between 1222 and 1235, which stands as the only remaining interior part of the castle after Oliver Cromwell's destruction. Take advantage of the exhibition corridor behind the gift shop to learn more of the history of the castle. Stroll around Queen Eleanor's garden featuring plants with symbolic meaning in medieval times. The castle is accessible by train at Winchester station, a ten-minute walk, or by the Tower Street car park, a five-minute walk. Admission is free, but the castle trust gladly accepts donations on entry. Add The Great Hall and other attractions to your Winchester trip itinerary using our Winchester trip itinerary maker app .

An awe-inspiring building, with plenty of information boards in the hall. The museum gallery has many pictures illustrating Winchester's history. A small entry charge well justified. This is definitel...  more »

This visit took about 20 minutes and provided some insight into the history and architecture of Winchester. There is a nice garden to the side of the hall and a version of the found table.  more »

If like me you enjoy visiting castles/old buildings etc. then this is definitely worth a quick visit if you are in Winchester. It is rather small but beautiful. The small garden attached is a little gem of tranquility, the round table/King Arthur link seems a little strained but good fun.

An early Medieval hall & pretty much all that's left of Winchester castle. A suggested donation for entry (around £3)It has "King Arthur's round table" hanging on the wall and a garden plus small museum and shop too. If you've an interest in history it's worth a quick visit (An hour should fully cover it).

The hall is really beautiful. Great and imposing, and the huge round table really captures the attention. There's also a nice garden outside.

I really love this place it is so lovely to have a visit even if it is just one room it is filled with so much interesting and intriguing history. Already been twice in past few months but I would gladly go back and visit anytime! Also very friendly and helpful staff who really make you feel welcome.

A little light on features but an amazing place none the less. The gates commissioned for the marriage of Charles and Dianna are incredible.

Where to stay in Winchester

Hotels, B&Bs, and inns offer rooms on the upper floors of the historical town center's Victorian, Georgian, and Tudor buildings. These look out over the pedestrian streets, markets, and shops, as well as provide a convenient location to the main attractions. Cottages for rent near the River Itchen are set among thick trees near the water, but are still within walking distance of many of the city attractions.
