Marwell Zoo, Winchester

3.9
#1 of 11 in Parks in Winchester
Marwell Zoo offers you the opportunity to see wildlife up close and help save endangered species at the same time. In the 57 hectares (140 acres) of exhibits, view over 1,200 animals across 235 different species. Snow leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, gazelles, crocodiles, lemurs, and many more make their homes in enclosures that recreate their natural habitats. Follow one of the woodland trails to see small, local animals in the wild, and sit in on an expert talk about one of the zoo's species. The proceeds from your visit--including admission tickets that you can purchase online--support the zoo's conservation efforts in the UK and abroad. With our world travel planner, Winchester attractions like Marwell Zoo can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • I took my 2 year old grandaughter today and we had a lovely four hours together however the limited baby changing facilities were an issue. I could only find the one place and there was a large queue ...  more »
  • I have a soft spot for zoos that concern themselves more with the conservation of wildlife than ensuring guests see every animal up-close and personal. Marwell prides itself on its rarer species and h...  more »

  • A fabulous day out for all ages. The zoo is laid out in a circuit so you don't miss any animals. Your provided a map or we found using the app more useful as it updates to show you where you are within the zoo. However the Lego section of the app was not accurate in detecting sculptures location, even though I was right next to it. Animal enclosures were of good size, compared to others we have visited. On the down side saw many drinks bottles laying around and stuck in benches or fences. Need to supply more bins.
  • Me and wife went to Marwell after I had a knee operation. We hired a wheelchair (not from Marwell) for the day as I couldn't walk. This was a manual wheelchair so my wife had to push. Not sure if anyone else found this but the park is not suitable for wheelchairs. It was very difficult for her to push me around, especially when it was to get close to the enclosures. Now I'm not over weight (74kg) and my wife is fit and healthy, also not over weight. The ground was very uneven, stoney and full of pot holes. This ground would be okay if an electric wheelchair was used but we had to cut the day short as my wife physically could not push me around any more! Very disappointed. I'd be interested to know if anyone else came across this?
  • It was alright. I personally felt that it was way too big and too exhausting to see all of it in one day. Some animals need more attention regarding cleaningness (reason for 3 stars). Lego animals are nice and I like the small frames saying how many people, blocks and how much time it took to be built. Overall it was a nice experience, but I would not visit again in the near future.
  • Lovely zoo with a wide range of animals all of which live in spacious enclosures and appear well cared for. They have monthly clubs for children with annual passes and seasonal activities. Free parking and a nice range of places to get food etc
  • Lovely well kept zoo. Thoroughly enjoyable day. Great to have a free land train to get on and off of. Thought staff enthusiastic ... really interacted with the child I took as he had dressed up as a ranger/zoo keeper. It was a nice touch ... he had a wow day and will hold good memories. Definitely worth a visit.
