Wilton House, Wilton

4.3

Wilton House is an English country house at Wilton near Salisbury in Wiltshire. It has been the country seat of the Earls of Pembroke for over 400 years.

The first recorded building on the site of Wilton House was a priory founded by King Egbert circa 871. Through the munificence of King Alfred, the priory was granted lands and manors until it became wealthy and powerful. However, by the time Wilton Abbey was dissolved in the Dissolution of the Monasteries set in motion by King Henry VIII, its prosperity was already on the wane. Following the seizure of the abbey, Henry presented it and its attached estates to William Herbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke (in the 1551 creation) c.‚ÄČ1544.

  • Beautiful house. All the guides in the rooms were so knowledgeable, enthusiastic and friendly. The grounds are so lovingly kept and the cafeteria is great. A relaxing, bright space with a delicious varied menu. Wilton House is definitely a must visit.
  • The house and gardens are very well kept and great for a picnic. The adventure playground is a perfect place for kids to play about in and it's always very popular with the locals. It's a shame that this place isn't open on Fridays and Saturdays though.
  • Invited friends to visit Wilton House after introducing them to Historic Houses Association. This was the second visit for my sister and myself, so was confident that they too would enjoy the experience. We watched the short video regarding the history of the house and the line of Earls of Pembroke from 1557 to date. the video was well presented by Anna Massey, English Actress, and very informative, definitely not to be missed. We then looked at the present Lord Pembroke's collection of impressive classic cars. The House itself was interesting, the guides friendly and knowledgeable. A visit to the house is a must for art lovers. The Cafe/ Restaurant was acceptable.Carrot cake was delicious
  • Beautiful parcel of land with an amazing 475 year old building. Lovely gardens to walk around and great park for the kids! One of Salisbury's highlights!
  • Giving it a 4 as we didn't see the whole house, just the main entrance. Everything was clean, tidy and well presented. Cafe was busy but handelled itself well. Bacon sandwiches were great value and for a busy morning, great quality. Need to revisit.
