Whitby Museum, Whitby

Specialty Museum
Snake stones, a hangman’s locket, and an authentic hand of glory are just a few of arcane items at Whitby Museum. With a taste for the decidedly obscure, the museum’s collection also includes leeches, a ship’s figurehead, and fine examples of jet jewelry, made popular as mourning jewelry by Queen Victoria. If you have children, stop by the museum office first to request a “treasure map,” which guides the young ones to additional rarities both inside and outside along the museum’s park trail. An on-site cafe features homemade pastries. Put Whitby Museum at the forefront of your travel plans using our Whitby vacation route planner.

  • A fascinating place to spend a morning. Local history and natural history are very well covered. The art gallery there is excellent too.  more »
  • The museum is pricey and they don't take card payments for small amounts. The stairs and exhibits are dangerous for people in wheelchairs. The staff are a bit rude as well.  more »

  • Really nice little museum. Some fascinating fossils and a great way to learn some local history. Well kept and helpful, friendly staff. Check out the Hand of Glory ; disgusting but interesting. 5 stars.
  • Wonderfully diverse collection. The man on the desk (Peter?) was such a lovely character! He made us feel welcome and pointed out the best exhibits. If you like museums (jet, fossils, anthropology, model ships, weapons) then allow plenty of time. £5 well spent.
  • Lovely little museum. lots of oddities and great for fossil fanatics like myself (no plaster casts!) and a large selection of taxidermy. Despite me not being a massive fan of the history of humans, I have to admire them for some of the strange little bits and bobs they have such as the hand of glory and the victorian noahs ark boat toy. however, I cannot give you 5 stars as it was far too warm in there and my dad who was feeling a little ill had to throw up in the garden thanks to the heat of the museum.
  • The museum is a wonderful gem hidden away from the hustle of the town, so much history packed into the space! Probably the only place you are going to be able to touch the tusk of a Narwhal and find the Hand of Glory!
  • Stopped off for the kids to go in the play area. Which is big!
