Whitby Museum, Whitby

#1 of 7 in Museums in Whitby
Snake stones, a hangman’s locket, and an authentic hand of glory are just a few of arcane items at Whitby Museum. With a taste for the decidedly obscure, the museum’s collection also includes leeches, a ship’s figurehead, and fine examples of jet jewelry, made popular as mourning jewelry by Queen Victoria. If you have children, stop by the museum office first to request a “treasure map,” which guides the young ones to additional rarities both inside and outside along the museum’s park trail. An on-site cafe features homemade pastries. Work out when and for how long to visit Whitby Museum and other Whitby attractions using our handy Whitby online trip itinerary builder .

  • What an interesting place., on arrival the two volunteers made us very welcome. There is so much to see, the only downside it is very crowded, would it not be possible to move some of the exhibits to ...  more »

  • Amazing amount of items crammed in to the museum. Look out for the hand, and the fantastic display of hand made ships. The staff are friendly and will talk for hours about the contents. It's the sort of place you need to go to more than once to see everthing.
  • Wonderful museum. Crammed full of interesting artifacts, fossils, taxidermy...the list goes on. Something for everyone. Adult admission on 5 pounds, kids free. Fantastic way to spend a couple of hours away from the crowds. Highly recommended.
  • Whitby museum is a great example of a museum that has embraced it's traditional look and feel rather than trying to update with modern decor and interpretation. This results in a museum which is as much worth the visit for the charm of the old display cases as for the objects inside them. There's a lot to see and the £5 admission charge is well worth it in my opinion.
  • Excellent museum. Such a pleasant change to find a proper museum with a great variety of items. We will visit again as there is so much to see. Never change it. It is just what a museum should be. Art gallery is excellent too.
  • Amazing place to visit. Brimming with history

Where to stay in Whitby

The majority of the town's lodging is near the small harbor at the town center. Consider a guest room in one of the historical buildings that line the water or on one of the narrow streets that branch off from the boardwalk. For views of the picturesque town and the cathedral, consider lodging inland and up the hill. Ask about themed rooms designed for the Whitby Gothic Weekend.
