Whitby Abbey, Whitby

4.4
A ruined old abbey sitting atop the East Cliff in North Yorkshire, Whitby Abbey serves as a reminder of the area’s medieval heritage. Founded in the year 657, the abbey went out of use in 1538, when it was partially destroyed by the forces of Henry VIII. The site is complemented by a museum located in Cholmley House. • Well worth a visit should you be visiting Whitby. The abbey ruins are spectacular and the free audio guides guide you around while teaching you the history behind this historic monument. The abbey has two entrances one with more parking than the other. The rear entrance by the car park is the only location with toilet facilities so if you enter that way it's worth considering using them. The main entrance features limited parking and admits visitors though the spectacular abbey house and giftshop. The abbey is located just above 199 steps therefore can be a bit of a tiring walk to get to however as well as driving the abbey can be accessed by the open top bus when it is operating.
  • Hands down, one of the best locations in the UK. Access to the Abbey is by taking 199 steps (I also counted) and then you can enjoy the magnificent ruins of this Abbey.
  • Really good scene with amazing history, good picnic spot. Parking is always difficult. But loved the time spent there.
  • Bit of a surprise we had to pay to see this, I thought you just walked up there but the recorded guide was really interesting and well worth the admission price.
  • Whitby is truly a beautiful part of the English coast, with the beautiful harbour or the soft sandy beaches, as you inhale the fresh air you gain the full joy that Whitby can bring. A recommended meal would be the classic English fish and chips, with many shops to choose from you have a wide selection and the chance to eat fresh, locally caught fish. You take the walk up the hill to the abbey where you can take in the stunning view of Whitby below or admire the ruins of the famous abbey where the first English poet was believed to had written, it is truly an inspiring site. Another activity for those less interesting in the outdoors or walking is going to the arcades or the bram stoker's Dracula experience, there is an activity for all the family, and I hope this review has helped you decide how you would like to spend your time in Whitby.

Where to stay in Whitby

The majority of the town's lodging is near the small harbor at the town center. Consider a guest room in one of the historical buildings that line the water or on one of the narrow streets that branch off from the boardwalk. For views of the picturesque town and the cathedral, consider lodging inland and up the hill. Ask about themed rooms designed for the Whitby Gothic Weekend.
