Whitby Abbey, Whitby

4.3
A ruined old abbey sitting atop the East Cliff in North Yorkshire, Whitby Abbey serves as a reminder of the area’s medieval heritage. Founded in the year 657, the abbey went out of use in 1538, when it was partially destroyed by the forces of Henry VIII. The site is complemented by a museum located in Cholmley House. • The enormous ruins on the hill above the coastal town. Especially the Cathedral architecture is well visible, if you stand back a little further from the Museum to the stairs leading to Whitby. I can say that this place is something special, insanely beautiful (views of the coast). Is impressive!

  • Its OK if you like this kind of thing it does get busy in the summer nice to have a proper good look around the abbey. Could you spend all day here the answer to that is no. But its nice to go for a f...  more »

  • Great historic building!! Great for picture taking too and is well worth tackling the steps up to it! They put on great plays and events and also have a cafe and the staff there are really friendly and helpful! Amazing views from the top and a little museum part too with facts about the building and its history scattered around the place! Would highly recommend a visit to Whitby Abbey! The only alight criticism I have is it will be tricky for anyone who wants to visit that has trouble walking as it is a steep walk up a hill with many steps to the Abbey but it is a great place to visit and can be seen from long distance around Whitby so it is very easy to find!
  • Stunning Abbey well worth a vist, lots of picture opportunities to be had. A great day out if you are in the area. The inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula, Whitby Abbey sits high on a cliff overlooking the picturesque Yorkshire seaside town.
  • I've seen a load of ruined abbeys in the English Heritage lineup, but not many as impressive as Whitby Abbey, the imposing inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula. The abbey sits on top of the headland overlooking the town to the left and the sea to the right. It's a very atmospheric site, made all the more eerie by the adjacent clifftop graveyard. Downsides: parking is pay and display, and quite steep at £2 for an hour minimum stay. The only toilet at the entrance will also set you back 40p - not an awful lot, but a misstep in English Heritage's usually exemplary set-up.
  • Visited illuminated abbey. Wonderful experience Lots of atmosphere. Great photographic opportunities. Interesting stalls and entertainments.
  • Beautiful historic site with great little insights into the history in the audio book and also signposts. The staff at the reception and gift shop were some of the nicest people I have ever met we spent a good hour just talking about the history of the place and the alcohol in the gift shop which is lovely and I then brought some beautiful elder flower and lemon liquor because of this.
