Categories: Architectural Buildings, Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
A ruined old abbey sitting atop the East Cliff in North Yorkshire, Whitby Abbey serves as a reminder of the area’s medieval heritage. Founded in the year 657, the abbey went out of use in 1538, when it was partially destroyed by the forces of Henry VIII. The site is complemented by a museum located in Cholmley House. Well worth the 199 steps. Can take your time and has benches along the way so you can sit and have a rest and enjoy the view.

Fantastic historic landmark. Was really great staying at the bottom of the steps and the ability to visit this location right out our back door. The climb is worth the effort, the views are fantastic and the location is amazing. Worth the trip!
Im in 2016 and im 9 and 2 weeks ago the whole of my class went to whitby. Lets just say we went to whitby abbey and it was amazeballs i loved it
Absolutely stunning! Well worth a visit and reasonably priced too (free to English heritage members) free audio guide is given which my son loved listening to and it gives you all the information you need. Make sure you have your walking legs on if walking up from the old town!!
Nice to see, but instead of paying to get in near closing time we just stuck our heads over the car park wall and had a nice look at it. Great view over Whitby and there's a horse nearby with funny eyes, definitely worth the trip.
If you like old buildings and ruins too than you might want to have a look at this great old Abbey. We enjoyed to walk around and to inhale the atmosphere of this historical place. Luckily we had good weather which made it even more enjoyable. A great view down ti Whitby as well and just a stroll away from the center.
