Church of Saint Mary, Whitby, Whitby

4.7
#2 of 6 in Historic Sites in Whitby
The spooky, cliffside graveyard with its rows of crooked grey tombstones brought Church of Saint Mary, Whitby fame as the setting in Bram Stoker's Dracula novel. This Anglican parish church looms hilltop over the river and town below, a staggering 199 steep steps up from the town. The church was first founded in 1110 of Norman architecture with a fortress-like exterior, but the interior dates to the 18th and 19th centuries, with a three-story pulpit and box-style pews, some inscribed with "For Stranger Only." The interior features a variety of styles and decor, including one of the most complete sets of pre-Victorian furnishings in England. • Recently visited the church and found it so interesting. Thanks to the two ladies who were there and so informative about their church. Special thanks to the cockney lady from Old Cavendish. We might see you again and will always be reminded of you when we are in London Town.
  • Beautiful church unlike any other I've visited. The staff are very helpful and so nice. You can feel the history and atmosphere.
  • its worth a view after walking up the steps a bit of history inside with loads of old grave stones outside.
  • This church doesn't so much have pews as cubicles and I loved the early attempt at a hearing aid bolted to the pulpit. Ladies in the gift shop area were very friendly.
  • Very helpful staff and a lovely church.

Where to stay in Whitby

The majority of the town's lodging is near the small harbor at the town center. Consider a guest room in one of the historical buildings that line the water or on one of the narrow streets that branch off from the boardwalk. For views of the picturesque town and the cathedral, consider lodging inland and up the hill. Ask about themed rooms designed for the Whitby Gothic Weekend.
