For many years there has been talk of creating an attraction at West Bay based on the rich heritage of the harbour and its place on the World Heritage Coast. West Bay is relatively well served with restaurants, cafes and pubs. However, the resort has suffered from a shortage of all-weather attractions, particularly one that would record and celebrate the life and history of the settlement and the harbour, and its place as a popular seaside venue and one of the gateways to the Jurassic Coast.

The Bridport Area Development Trust (BADT) is working to create a visitor interpretation centre for West Bay by restoring and converting a former Methodist church. The church often referred to as the “Chapel on the Beach” was constructed in 1849. It ceased operating as a place of worship in 2007. The building then reverted to West Dorset District Council (WDDC), which owns the land on which the chapel sits. In July 2012, WDDC transferred the freehold ownership of the property to the Trust.

The chapel is listed as being of special architectural or historic interest and is scheduled Grade II. It is sited within the West Bay Conservation Area and regarded locally as a building at risk.

The West Bay Discovery Centre will fill a void that exists in provision of information about West Bay, its history and heritage and the surrounding environment of the Jurassic Coast.

  • Museum nice and informative pity about the very rude staff who are certainly not child friendly
  • Found this discovery centre very interesting and well laid out. Friendly people running it. Excellent for children with various hands-on activities for them.
