  • One of those "little gems" that one comes across occasionally. Not so much for its display content : but rather for its somewhat unique location. It was unexpectedly uncovered during construction of the A1(M) Motorway. But rather than re-route the motorway at huge cost, the motorway was simply built right over it and provision made to preserve it within a large cavern hollowed out below the very centre of the motorway itself and accessed by pedestrian tunnel from the (small) visitors car park. This gives visiting it a "secret garden" feeling so beloved by many children (and many adults too). The finds themselves are intesting but not especially remarkable. There are better preserved Roman bathhouses with more bountiful displays of artifacts elsewhere in the country. But nevertheless, a good job has been done with what was found. The entrance is off a small visitors car park accessed from the South bound slip road (only) off the A1(M) at its J7 (Welwyn Garden City / Old Welwyn). But be aware ! : you have to be fairly on the ball not to miss it. The car park has visitors' toilet facilities : there are none in the Friday cavern or the approach tunnel. Opening times are restricted : so it it is most advisable to check them on the Welwyn-Hatfield Council website. Would I visit again ? Probably not to be honest. But I would take someone who had never done do to see it.
  • Fantastic place for all ages. Under cover so its a place to visit in all kinds of weather. Great information, with a load of fun things for the children to do like puzzles, colouring in doing these activities their also learning. A hidden treasure.
  • Well worth a visit. Activities for kids including some very smelly exhibits
  • We had lots of fun
  • Greatly preserved area, accessible staff. Recommended for a visit.
