#3 of 26 in Things to do in Wells
A spectacular medieval palace, The Bishop's Palace and Gardens contains 800 years of history. Walk across the flagstone drawbridge and under the portcullis to cross the moat and enter this beautiful palace. As you explore 5.7 hectares (14 acres) of gardens, keep an eye out for swans living next to the moat that ring a bell when they are hungry. Bring a picnic to the lawns and enjoy the picturesque backdrop. Visit Well Pools in the outer gardens for a moment of serenity. To learn more about the palace, use the treasure hunt card, which discusses the palace's history as you search for items and features located in the house and on the grounds. • +JMJ...My British friends enlightened my mind and broadened by horizons by taking me to so many places I had never heard of. Though an overcast, rainy day, I was delighted with every visible manifestation of ancient English history. That which was most captivating about this visit was standing on historic grounds.
  • Lovely gardens, blissful and quiet. Cheap to get in. Had an enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide take us round, thoroughly enjoyed it. House was mediocre but pleasant enough. They allow you to enter and leave throughout the day. Cafe there is perfectly reasonable and has fantastic views of the front of the house.
  • Great place for a family to visit. You can take your dogs into the garden which is a real bonus. Many of the buildings are open to explore (no dogs in there though). The gardens are stunning and there is loads of information on the history of the place.
  • It was fantastic.. The gardens were tranquil and beautiful. Really enjoyed it as did the rest of the family! Bring a picnic and chill out... then have a cup of tea in the cafe later.
  • Lovely place, very restful. However i feel that dogs should not be allowed in though
