Pencarrow House and Gardens, Washaway

For nearly 500 years, Pencarrow has been the much-loved home of the Molesworth-St Aubyns, ever since John Molesworth arrived from Northamptonshire to become the Auditor for the Duchy of Cornwall and Queen Elizabeth I.

Still owned by his descendants, Pencarrow is anything but a museum. Family photos, children’s toys, hats on classical busts and the pet dog Molly bring this Cornish mansion alive and allow you a glimpse of what it’s like to live surrounded by so much history. And please don’t be too surprised at the odd cobweb here or there – after all, this really is a family home.

  • Our house tour guide Judy was very helpful and friendly to everybody and made sure that everybody was involved in the tour. If you don't want to visit the house you can also just visit the gardens if you want to have a nice walk around the grounds. All in all a great day out.
  • Very interesting tour. Tour guide included the kids to make it more fun for them. Nice cafe and big awesome play park. Very nice walk trails. Definitely recommend.
  • This was a really great day out. The guide Sue was so knowledgeable about the house and it's owners. She drew us all into the story so well. Had delicious cream cakes and scones afterwards.
  • Lovely house with a good guided tour but what made it for me was the lovely walk through the 20 acre landscaped gardens. I would say definitely worth a visit.
  • A very good guided tour of the house. Beautiful gardens and walks to explore. Cafe/restaurant excellent. We had a very chilled out visit.
