Pencarrow House and Gardens, Washaway

4.5
For nearly 500 years, Pencarrow has been the much-loved home of the Molesworth-St Aubyns, ever since John Molesworth arrived from Northamptonshire to become the Auditor for the Duchy of Cornwall and Queen Elizabeth I.

Still owned by his descendants, Pencarrow is anything but a museum. Family photos, children’s toys, hats on classical busts and the pet dog Molly bring this Cornish mansion alive and allow you a glimpse of what it’s like to live surrounded by so much history. And please don’t be too surprised at the odd cobweb here or there – after all, this really is a family home.

  • Such a beautiful place. We had a guided tour of the house, extremely interesting and informative guide. The gardens are really beautiful with a lake. There is a tearoom with lovely seating in a garden area for sunny days with visits from two magnificent peacocks. Nice toilets, play area for children, just a great day out
  • Beautiful hidden gem in the North Cornwall countryside! House and gardens are both stunning. Privately owned, and the house is open to the public from Easter til end of summer. Great tea rooms in the courtyard garden. Dog friendly....look out for the Peacocks roaming around, there are a few of them. 😊
  • Pencarrow House is just outside Bodmin on the way to Wadebridge. The house and gardens are amazing and the guided tour is not to be missed! Full of history this place is a must if you like your history and how they lived. Still owned by part of the same family part of the same family
  • Wonderful house. Wonderful staff particularly Mandy who was very knowledgeable. Could've done with more staff in the cafe as a coach party turned up & service was very slow. It was so nice as it wasn't commercialised like National Trust properties & I heard other visitors commenting on this too. Dogs are welcome. Would visit again.
  • We got married there nearly 12years ago will always love it there
