Walmer Castle and Gardens, Walmer
(4.7/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Experience the lifestyle of English royalty at Walmer Castle and Gardens, a former artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII. The fort consisted of a keep and four circular bastions surrounded by a moat, built to defend the strategically important coastal areas against invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire. In the 18th century the military fortification became a private residence with extensive landscaped gardens. In the early 20th century, the castle and its grounds opened to the public. Pick up an informative audio guide at the entrance, and stop at the tea room for some sandwiches and scones. Put Walmer Castle and Gardens into our Walmer trip itinerary planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • If you want to experience a well-kept piece of English Heritage - this is a place to visit! + one of the smaller English castles + set close to the coast/beach + easy to find + friendly staff + well-p...  more »
  • We were 2 adults and 2 children. It hoped that the castle would be what we liked this visit, but gardens were what they most enjoy. First we visited the Castle, in which photos can not be, but that we liked enough, especially by various curiosities that hosts. Then we toured around the splendid gardens, up to the last, a large Esplanade opposite the Castle bridge. I thought lie me peacefully to take some minutes, but a man is directed to us and we asked if wanted to play to the croquet. As not knew play is offered very kindly to teach us, and you accompanied vehemently their father (many thanks to those two). On the Esplanade had a game of croquet, freely available for use, and 4 had a very fun time, especially the children. Of course, when finished let it collected in a nearby cabin. A surprise visit. Very nice and very British.

  • One of the best Audio Tours, very fascinating castle to explore. Love the Queen Mother's garden, could have sat there all day. I would have happily moved in and lived there - first time I've ever felt like that about a historical building!
  • I loved Walmer Castle, it is set on the Kent coast and has a profound history dating back to 1539 and was built by Henry V111. The castle is fascinating and the gardens are stunning. Try to visit when the weather is good as it will be a much better experience.
  • A lot more interesting than I expected and great to see the Duke of Wellingtons original stuff there, including the chair he died in. Great gardens as well. Overall a very nice few hours out.
  • Very interesting English Heritage property. A Napoleonic defensive fort in a lovely location and since transformed by multiple owners. Well worth a visit as is its other surviving partner Deal Castle.
  • That is beautiful place. Not only castle but, also very pretty and charming gardens. Come with your kids, whole family. Take your grandparents and plays a bit in woods or just have picnic. Make lots of photo shots. You can learn about history of England with audio guides. Very nice tea room with great selection of cakes. Place recommended.
