Walmer Castle and Gardens, Walmer

#1 of 8 in Things to do in Walmer
Experience the lifestyle of English royalty at Walmer Castle and Gardens, a former artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII. The fort consisted of a keep and four circular bastions surrounded by a moat, built to defend the strategically important coastal areas against invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire. In the 18th century the military fortification became a private residence with extensive landscaped gardens. In the early 20th century, the castle and its grounds opened to the public. Pick up an informative audio guide at the entrance, and stop at the tea room for some sandwiches and scones. • As part of our "visit before we die" discovery of all those local places we have somehow failed to see in 40+ years living in Kent, we finally made it to Walmer Castle. I feel ashamed to admit that we...  more »

  • Beautiful grounds in this castle. My teenage kids enjoyed it as there were things to do and they even said they would like to return. There was an interactive guide with both adult and family tours, the latter with lots of games and quizzes about the house. Stunning views from the tea room too. Go on a nice day to get the best from this property.
  • I have visited the beautiful castle and gardens several times and always enjoy the whole experience. I visited again yesterday and had the opportunity to spend some time with the tour guide. He was very informative and intetesting, adding a more personal touch to this visit. The gift shop is always well displayed and sells locally produced goods.
  • Spent a very enjoyable and relaxed 3-4 hours here as a family. Children were intrigued by the historical rooms of the castle and the stories of all the impressive characters that stayed there. The gardens were beautiful, make sure you take the time to walk the moat. Great place for a picnic.
  • A lovely well preserved piece of England's history, especially if you have any interest in the Duke of Wellington. With many surviving objects and personal possessions of the Duke on show. It also has a beautiful garden that is well worth visiting any time of the year.
  • Brilliant castle to take maybe children over 10, unless they don't mind going around rooms! The grounds are good for a good run around & they have picnic benches.
