Walmer Castle and Gardens, Walmer

#1 of 8 in Things to do in Walmer
Experience the lifestyle of English royalty at Walmer Castle and Gardens, a former artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII. The fort consisted of a keep and four circular bastions surrounded by a moat, built to defend the strategically important coastal areas against invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire. In the 18th century the military fortification became a private residence with extensive landscaped gardens. In the early 20th century, the castle and its grounds opened to the public. Pick up an informative audio guide at the entrance, and stop at the tea room for some sandwiches and scones. • Great couple of hours out with the children. Whistle stop tour of the house but couple of hours in the sunshine. Children loved jumping between stepping stone logs, feeding the fish in the pond, smelling all the flowers and finishing with an ice-lolly in the cafe. Lovely cappuccino available too. Recommended English Heritage site.
  • English Heritage have done a wonderful job of making this an interesting and worthwhile place to visit. Of the many famous people who lived here William Pitt and The Duke of Wellington deserve special mention. The Duke's Wellington boots are on display. Well worth a visit!
  • Beautiful gardens specially designed for our late Queen Mother for everyone to enjoy young and old. The castle is bursting with history which you can browse in a relaxed atmosphere. Special events are often on offer, check out their website for more information.
  • Charming castle full of history (Henry VIII, William Pitt the Younger, Duke of Wellington, etc) with a lovely garden/park and small flower greenhouses. Next to the seaside so great for a walk too. There is a free car park -at least on Easter weekend and likely during off peak season.
  • Lovely gardens. Rooms full of historical information. Ex serviceman and naval buffs will find it especially interesting. We went to see Walker and then Chatham Naval Museum a few days later as some things cross over. Very nice quiet beech with car park just opposite. Licensed cafe in walls of castle, which also does lovely cream teas and there is a entrap outside. Deal castle just up the road. Balcony in Walker has superb views. Lovely pubs nearby in Deal. Recommend Ship and Royal Hotel. Both smuggler's pubs. 81 Beach Street is moderately expensive but superb food. Wetherspoons nearby if you want to save. Royal Hotel also does food. If you go to 81 Beach St ask for 'catch of the, day'
