Nice enough historical place, to go for walk around, but in effect a ruin, with some lovely views over the sea.  more »

As castles go, this is a bit of a ruin but it still has that steeped in history feel and the views from the castle mount across the Tyne towards South Shields and beyond are stunning. Worth a trip and...  more »

Stunning views, intriguing architecture with something for everyone. The history is amazing, the ruins have been kept beautifully.  more »
  • We were lucky to visit on a beautiful sunny day. That said the castle and priory are situated on an exposed cliff top, I could see this place being a cold and windy place in different weather. The majority of the grounds inside are grassed and open, ideal for kids to run around on. I wish we'd brought a picnic to have in the grounds. The views from gun emplacements are fantastic with good views of the sea and the bays. My two boys loved the castle and priory and found the place interesting. As always with English Heritage the staff were very helpful and friendly. A great time had by all of us.
  • Picturesque town , worth a look around too, Priory & Castle is a good place for all to visit , stunning views that are only marred by the ugly eighties lifeguard lookout base (now unused). No parking on site (unless blue badge holder) , but free carpark (2 hours Max) or a pay and display are just a short walk away.... No cafe in site
  • Beautiful situation in a lovely town, by the sea. Able to explore the grounds, top part of the castle, priory, battlements exhibition. A great place for all the family, amazing history. A visit is a must. This will take at least two hours to visit.
  • Gorgeous countryside and panoramic view of the mouth of the Tyne at the North Sea. The remains of the Priory structure inspire both awe and genuflection.
  • Beautiful historic place. Very nice to visit in a sunny day.
