Babbacombe Model Village, Torquay

4.5
#1 of 15 in Theme Parks in Devon
Babbacombe Model Village is England in miniature. Over 400 models make up the village on over 1.6 hectares (4 acres) of rolling English pastures; it is entirely fictional, but famous English landmarks, such as Stonehenge, inspire many of the sites there. Puns are the wit of choice here, and you'll see no shortage of them in the business names, such as Terry Bull Gardening Service. Tom Dobbins created this miniature marvel, which includes an iconic English castle, windmills, and people. • Came here with our children when they were young and revisited this week with our grandchildren. We had a lovely time looking at some of the old and many new additions. We loved the modern themes which blended in beautifully with the old and the gardens were just fabulous. Don't forget to have a coffee or ice cream before you leave and look out over the gardens from this beautiful viewpoint. Worth every penny.
  • The model village is bigger than I expected. It is built on a steep slope. This is a disadvantage for anyone with mobility issues, however the slope allows for excellent vistas if the whole village. Overall it is an excellent day out. I would give 5 stars but the parking system (which is run by the council) . This is a big let down as the parking is not timed. You have to estimate your visit duration or pay an excess fee (or risk a fat fine). This makes you feel rushed to complete your visit faster and detracts from what would be a 5 star visit. Apart from that the attraction is excellent with attention to detail and even a picnic area with tables at the bottom. The model houses have a myriad of comical details to look out for. Model trains run through areas and they even offer a free return to the night time show when the various lights are switched on. I recommend 2 to 3 hours minimum if you have a small meal and want to spot some hidden details, perhaps up to 4 hours for a more relaxed walk through and to take in all the details.
  • Spent four hours here, Halloween trip well planned. Lovely place. Village looks great at night. Would recommend for families.
  • Great for young children. Fun activities and stuff to see for the under 5. Have visited dozens of times because my children love it and couldn't rate it higher. I, as an adult, find it embodies all that is tedious. Beware too, steep hill. Your young children will enjoy.
  • Came years ago with my kids. This time just me and the wife. Enjoyed the experience however some of the "railed" exhibits were not working. Tried the 4d cinema..which was fun for the 12 minutes.
