Chavenage House, Tetbury

4.8
#3 of 13 in Things to do in Tetbury
Tour centuries of English history in an original setting at Chavenage House, an Elizabethan period manor. Made of Cotswold stone and a tiled roof, the house features two ornate tapestry rooms, tall stained glass windows, and extensive paneling with English Civil War and Edwardian sections. Take the two-hour tour given by a member of the owning family, who will share numerous anecdotes, including the royalist legend of Chavenage, a curse of fatal sickness for acquiescing in the execution of Charles I. This photogenic piece of property with a garden designed by Lancelot "Capability" Brown remains very popular for wedding photos and shooting historical films. For refreshment, head to Tetbury, about 2.4 km (1.5 mi) away. Use our Tetbury itinerary planner to arrange your visit to Chavenage House and other attractions in Tetbury.

  • As a great fan of Poldark we visited Chavenage House and had a very pleasent afternoon. The house is a family home and the tour guide was a member of the family. Caroline was very entertaining with ma...  more »

  • This place is a gem. I took a group of 45 people and we had a fab day with amusing and informing anecdotes and talks. The tour of the house was wonderful and the two course meal delicious. It is just one of those gems you must not miss.
  • Went because of the poldark connection. But this house is so much more. Guided tour from a family member, funny, informative, interesting! You can sit on all the old furniture, not at all like national trust where everything is roped off or please do not touch signs.... refreshing history
  • Really welcoming family run tours- really glad it's so homely and far from a museum piece. I've been here on a tour, also working(filming on location) and to a couple of parties. It is so atmospheric and there is so much to see. Beautiful gardens and wonderful history.
  • This family-run tour is unique in today's world. Tours are only on Thursday and Sunday afternoons. Don't miss the chance for an in depth look at this fine old house. It's the site used for filming Poldark and Wolf Hall.
  • Excellent tour. The tour guide, Caroline Lowsley Williams of the owning family, exceptional. Knowledgeable and witty which made the tour enjoyable.
