The North East Land, Sea and Air Museums (NELSAM), is an entirely volunteer-run transport museum situated on the site of the former RAF Usworth/Sunderland Airport, between Washington and Sunderland, England.

The museum has the largest aviation collection between Yorkshire and Scotland and houses over 30 aircraft and a wide collection of aero engines, as well as the Military Vehicle Museum, formerly based in Newcastle upon Tyne, which holds a collection of WW2 and post war vehicles.

The museum also has a collection of other items such as weaponry, military vehicles, trams & buses, and other historical exhibits. A collection of fire appliances was added to the collection and the North East Electric Transport Trust have been working on preparing their collection of trams ready to open this year.

Special exhibitions cover the WW2 Blitz and 607 County of Durham Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force formed at RAF Usworth.

  • I visited back in April with my tranpsort-obsessed three-year old son who was fascinated at seeing the aeroplanes and trucks so closely. We were talking about it on Saturday and he asked if we could g...  more »
  • A number of aeroplanes to look - more than I expected. There's also WW2 street scenes and so on. The cock pit and child helicopter ride were an instant success with our small child.  more »

  • Some interesting exhibits but quite small and in need of freshening up. The focus appears to be mainly on military aircraft and vehicles, although not exclusively. There is one quite well put together exhibit on life during the Second World War, and some info on local Air Force activity. Otherwise the key exhibits are mainly early post war US and British military jets and weapons. There is info on some exhibits but no context or storyline. As a local offering it does for kids and enthusiasts who want to get up close to aircraft.
  • Not huge, but good. Kids enjoyed the 2 hours we spent there and it has a vulcan so I'm happy. It's missing a kids play area as this would allow you to flick between play and planes which would mean more time out
  • A place to spend a few hours rather than all day. Tatty appearance in places but the aircraft are great to look at. If you want to get inside the Vulcan check their website as it's only accessible on certain days.
  • If you love planes this is a great day out, large indoor display as also a selection of planes and helicopters outside.
  • Up close experience to planes, great things for kids, lots of grass near so great if you have animals, restaurant near too and little place for flowers.
