#4 of 8 in Parks in Sunderland
Mowbray Park is a municipal park in the centre of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England, located a few hundred yards from the busy thoroughfares of Holmeside and Fawcett Street and bordered by Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens to the north, Burdon Road to the west, Toward Road to the east and Park Road to the south. The park was voted best in Britain in 2008.HistoryMowbray Park is one of the oldest municipal parks in North East England. The roots of Mowbray Park date back to the 1830s, when a health inspector recommended building a leafy area in the town after Sunderland recorded the first cholera epidemic in 1831. A grant of £750 was provided by the Government to buy a £2,000 plot of land from the Mowbray family for a new park.Work on Mowbray Park – then known as The People's Park – began in the mid-1850s, incorporating a former limestone quarry set within what was known as Building Hill. It appears that spoil heaps were shaped and mounded to create distinctive paths amongst steep sided hummocks. The effect was to afford the Victorian user plenty of opportunity to perambulate within a relatively small green area. The park was opened by John Candlish, Lord Mayor MP of Sunderland on 21 May 1857.

  • Park in the city centre behind the Museum and Winter Garden. Has a small pond filled with swans and ducks. A little too much dirt in the water. In the square near the Lake there is a statue representing a walrus full and overflowing with excrement ... However a nice parquet!

  • Lovely, peaceful space away from the madness of the shoppers and centre. I bet it's lively when all in bloom, But it still had snow on the ground when I visited. Nice little paths to meander through. I didn't go into the Museum and Winter Gardens, But I walked around the outside of the Botanical Garden bit and peeled inside. A play area for the kids too.
  • On a cosmetic, superficial basis, Mowbray Park looks quite good with some of its original features still intact. But, it does lack certain amenities and, in terms of it's safety values, leaves a lot to be desired. The park is frequented by a grim assortment of dubious characters, some of a violent, unpredictable nature. A walk in this park at the wrong time of day can be a rather unpleasant experience. Mowbray park also has a play park area which caters for children and those of a youthful disposition.
  • Me and my friend went to take some photos for my blog. It was very fun. I have always enjoyed this park and my feelings have not changed! ☺️
  • Will kept park with nice walks, play park and duck pond with a fountain and walrus sculpture. Great place to come and enjoy a break from the busy city centre, especially while the sun is out.
  • Great flowers. Best park and city in the north east. Go more up north and all you get is smack rats.
