Anne Hathaway's Cottage & Gardens, Stratford-upon-Avon

(4.3/5 based on 2,000+ reviews on the web)
Set among extensive gardens, Anne Hathaway's Cottage & Gardens is located only 1.6 km (1 mi) from Shakespeare's birthplace. The house was passed down through the Hathaway family until 1846, but the family still lived there as tenants in 1892 when the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust acquired the property. Inside you'll see spacious rooms that have been redecorated to resemble what they may have looked like during the life of Anne Hathaway, William Shakespeare's wife. In the gardens, you'll find modern sculptures depicting Anne and Shakespeare's sad story. Save money by buying your tickets in a package that includes entry to all the Shakespeare sites in the area. Wear good walking shoes and consider walking between each site to enjoy the surrounding countryside. • Museum of Shakespeare's wife's former childhood family home, restored. No restaurant, but some within the surrounding area. You will find The Hathaway Tea and Bakery cafe just in the area.
  • Well maintained and informative and helpful staff. Lovely grounds. Nearby parking facilities. Cottage has some stairs and low ceilings and tricky to negotiate floors in places so may pose slight problems for some.
  • Peaceful garden and curious cottage, but ultimately little here to entertain for the price. Only come if you have an all inclusive ticket and fancy the walk. We spotted a kingfisher on the generous walk across town.
  • A lovely cottage that looks like the house only exists in the fairy tales.
  • What a great place to visit. Seeing how the world was in Shakespeare's time
