Lews Castle, Stornoway

(3.9/5 based on 190+ reviews on the web)
Stretch your legs on the scenic grounds of Lews Castle. The Victorian-era structure was built as a country retreat for Sir James Matheson, who once owned the entire island, and it's easy to see why the entrepreneur would want to spend his holidays in this relaxing spot. Restoration of the interior is currently underway, so you cannot access the inside of the castle. The outdoor property, however, remains open, so you can stroll across the verdant grass, enjoy superb harbor views, and spot seals basking in the distance. An on-site cafe serves as an ideal rest spot for weary walkers, serving up hot drinks and fortifying home-cooked meals. • The refurbished castle has not completely had its makeover finished but what is up and running is good. The museum is spectacularly modern by island standards but there seems to be a bit too much spac...  more »

  • A nice exhibition on the Islands. Worth visiting. Beautifully renovated building.
  • A very pretty castle with wonderful walking tracks around it
  • Iconic historic castle. In the process of being renovated. Now partially open for business as a retreat and function centre. Looks very impressive so far! Has the new museum attached to it.
  • Fascinating work in progress.
  • So long empty and derelict, now it's an inviting place to spend the day!
