Lews Castle, Stornoway

4.0
#4 of 8 in Historic Sites in Isle of Lewis
Castle Tourist Spot
Stretch your legs on the scenic grounds of Lews Castle. The Victorian-era structure was built as a country retreat for Sir James Matheson, who once owned the entire island, and it's easy to see why the entrepreneur would want to spend his holidays in this relaxing spot. Restoration of the interior is currently underway, so you cannot access the inside of the castle. The outdoor property, however, remains open, so you can stroll across the verdant grass, enjoy superb harbor views, and spot seals basking in the distance. An on-site cafe serves as an ideal rest spot for weary walkers, serving up hot drinks and fortifying home-cooked meals. • Fantastic hotel in a great location with stunning views over the harbour. Newly opened and very impressive.
  • Interesting museum, lovely restored building. Starbucks Coffee and baking, basic food day to day. Though special events run in which the food is, I hear excellent.
  • I couldn't visit the interiors as we arrived at Stornoway at late evening both days after hundreds more miles around the island. Nice green Gardens facing the port of Stornoway, after a long day crossing infinite distances of dark, brownish moorland it feels like you entered a portal bringing you elsewhere.
  • Very modern space in a beautiful setting. Well worth a visit
  • The facility is excellent with a great Museum. The one fault is the poor Starbucks coffee from a machine which you wouldn't expect from such a setting
