Woodchester Mansion Trust, Stonehouse

4.6
Take a tour of an unfinished Gothic revival building, Woodchester Mansion Trust. Construction began on the mansion in 1858, but ceased completely when the owner William Leigh died. Leigh's surviving family, significantly less interested in the mansion's austere design than Leigh himself, could not afford the cost of demolishing the building and starting over. Today the mansion, which appears completed from the outside, provides a unique insight into the techniques of Victorian stone masons. After admiring the unfinished rooms, gargoyles, and fine interior carvings of the house, take some time to explore the extensive gardens and grounds that surround it, including shady woods and several carp-filled lakes. A cafe on the grounds provides refreshments. • I love this place and the intriguing story behind it. The tour was interesting and informative. On a good day you could go round Woodchester Park, too.  more »

  • Very impressive place to study conversation of historical building. Able to see unaccomplished structure and material. Nice place for wedding.
  • Amazing building with interesting history. Great walks in the area, some easy ones and some hard. Look out for the gargoyles!
  • Tour the house in its unfinished state. You get to see the hidden detail of building a stately home. After, walk around the lake then coffee & cake. Holding back a star because they've not organised a carpark to take payments by phone
  • Fascinating building and pleasant parkland for walks. Surrounding countryside is good too.
  • Pleasant and not too long walks around the Park. Free entry to Park, just have to pay for parking if not in the NT. Refreshments available.
