Dunnottar Castle Parking, Stonehaven

(4.6/5 based on 1,700+ reviews on the web)
Perched atop steep cliffs that plunge 50 m (160 ft) down to the North Sea, Dunnottar Castle Parking is what's left of the strategically located home of one of Scotland's noble families. The ruins spread across a 3.5 acre (1.4 hectare) plot on the cliff’s edge. One of the largest buildings is the tower house, which stood 15 m (49 ft) when at its full height. It had a great hall and upstairs bedrooms for the castle's lord. Wear good walking shoes to the site because the parking lot is located at the base of an 800 m (2,600 ft) footpath that leads up to the castle. • In my opinion this was the prettiest castle I've been in Scotland. The location is amazing and the inside of it is so nice. Really worth the visit.
  • To my personally I loved it and that we were the second day of new year and was closed on the inside, which was a big disappointment for all those who were there. However, we could see it from many angles different no matter, it was well worth going up there to see it. If you have time it is nice to follow the path on the left to the memorial of stonehaven since it is a walk observing and enjoying a few precious cliffs. Despite being ruins Castle is well preserved and you can imagine in full as it was. For the lovers of those video games already know that is the castle in which is inspired the map of stonhaven of the gosth of the call of duty. Sea, sky, Cliff, Castle... beautiful... and that the day we went we were at 0 degrees and the Sun was shining absent most of the time. Whether a day rain or humidity, having that there will be a quagmire, so bring appropriate footwear. To reach the castle to enter inside there many stairs which then have to climb, next to the Castle and its entry there is a Cove beautiful that in days of good weather it should be entertaining and suitable for bath perhaps. In the summer I guess that it will be completely different, with more people also. It is that magical place that according to the time of the year should be quite different, with a different charm in each of them. Fantastic

  • We drove from Aberdeen on our way to Ballatar and stopped here - we didn't go inside the castle (you have to pay and it was pretty cold) but the views around the castle and the view of the water was b...  more »

  • Beautifully located carpark with only a short walk to the castle. There's a place to buy hot food there as well.
  • Amazing views and good access, bit pricey to go in the castle though.
  • Small and over-subscribed. The surfacing is not even. Take the advice and walk up from Stonehaven
  • The parking itself was great with easy access to the trail leading to the castle. The trail itself it quite long and steep for those with who have a more difficult time with that. Get there early though as the parking lot isn't that big.
  • very nice view, and entrance cost is also less comparatively. 7£.worth it
